US Research community members seek to resolve author name ambiguity issue - 07 Dec 2009

Various members of the research community have announced their intent to collaborate to resolve the existing author name ambiguity problem in scholarly communication. Together, the group hopes to develop an open, independent identification system for scholarly authors. This follows the first Name Identifier Summit held last month in Cambridge, MA, by Thomson Reuters and Nature Publishing Group, where a cross-section of the research community explored approaches to address name ambiguity. A follow-on meeting of this group took place in London last week to discuss the next steps.

Accurate identification of researchers and their work is seen as key for the transition from science to e-science, wherein scholarly publications can be mined to spot links and ideas hidden in the growing volume of scholarly literature. A disambiguated set of authors will allow new services and benefits to be built for the research community by all stakeholders in scholarly communication: from commercial actors to non-profit organisations, from governments to universities.

The organisations that have agreed to work together to overcome the contributor identification issue include: American Institute of Physics, American Psychological Association, Association for Computing Machinery, British Library, CrossRef, Elsevier, European Molecular Biology Organisation, Hindawi, INSPIRE (project of CERN, DESY, Fermilab, SLAC), Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries, Nature Publishing Group, Public Library of Science, ProQuest, SAGE Publications Inc., Springer, Thomson Reuters, University College London, University of Manchester (JISC Names Project), University of Vienna, Wellcome Trust and Wiley-Blackwell.

UK Ipex 2010 event to feature debates on future of print industry - 07 Dec 2009

Events organiser IIR Exhibitions, UK, has announced that the Ipex 2010 event, scheduled for May 18-25, 2010, at Birmingham, will feature a series of free-of-charge expert panel debates on critical issues facing the print industry today. Produced by Pira International in association with Ipex, the Great Print Debates is scheduled to bring together experts and industry representatives to produce expert commentary, various debates and audience interactivity. Ipex is projected as the largest English-speaking global technology event for print, publishing and media.

The four main questions to be considered are: More than ink on paper: how should printers be selling print?; What will the printer of the future look like?; Will an Ipod for publishing kill printed media?; and Green print: is it worth it?

Joining Sean Smyth and Frank Romano as Debate chairs will be Neil Falconer, Senior Consultant, Pira International, and Laurel Brunner, Digital Dots. Panelists include Rob Haak, President, SPIKIX; Adam Dewitz, Director of Technology, WhatTheyThink.com; Stephen Goddard, Environmental Leadership Program Manager, Hewlett-Packard, and Marcia Balisciano, Director of Corporate Responsibility, Reed Elsevier.

Audience participation and interaction using simple polling technology are expected to allow real-time feedback and drive the questioning of the panel chair, pushing the experts out of their comfort zone. Debate participants will be given a study report – titled Print to 2020 - with scenarios and forecasts to 2020. With input from a panel of print and publishing experts from around the world, Print to 2020 is expected to provide a global summary of the major challenges, threats and opportunities facing the printing industry. Building upon the themes discussed at the Ipex/Pira forums, the study will seek to offer a roadmap for how these issues are likely to develop over the next 10 years. Print to 2020 is published by Pira International.

US Wiley-Blackwell announces 7th edition of TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours - 07 Dec 2009

Wiley-Blackwell, the STM and scholarly publishing business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc, US, has announced the release of the latest edition of TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours.

TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours, 7th Edition, offers an international approach to cancer classification and staging, with the latest information and best evidence carefully vetted and included by a multidisciplinary panel of experts from around the world. The material is therefore immediately applicable to patients worldwide, and not influenced by any particular healthcare system. The publication's greatest virtue continues to be its simplicity, distilling and arranging complex data in a way that is immediately applicable wherever cancer patients are seen.

The 7th edition provides the latest, internationally agreed-upon standards to describe and categorise cancer stages and progression. Published in affiliation with the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), this authoritative guide contains important updated organ-specific classifications that oncologists and other professionals who manage patients with cancer need to accurately classify tumours for staging, prognosis and treatment.

The major alterations addressed in this edition concern carcinomas of the oesophagus and the gastroesophageal junction, stomach, lung, appendix, biliary tract, skin, and prostate. In addition, there are several entirely new classifications. These include gastrointestinal carcinoids (neuroendocrine tumours); gastrointestinal stromal tumour; upper aerodigestive mucosal melanoma; Merkel cell carcinoma; uterine sarcomas; intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma; and adrenal cortical carcinoma.

A new approach has also been adopted to separate anatomical stage groupings from prognostic groupings in which other prognostic factors are added to T, N, and M categories. These new prognostic groupings, as well as the traditional anatomical groupings, are presented for oesophageal and prostate carcinomas.

UK New publishing and digital home for mathematics journal, Mathematika - 07 Dec 2009

Cambridge Journals, a division of Cambridge University Press (CUP), US, and the London Mathematical Society have announced new publishing and digital home for the journal Mathematika. Previously self-published by University College London, the journal will now be published on their behalf by the London Mathematical Society.

Mathematika publishes both pure and applied mathematical articles, and has done so continuously since its founding by Harold Davenport in the 1950s. The traditional emphasis has been towards the purer side of mathematics but applied mathematics and articles addressing both aspects are equally welcome.

In addition to this new relationship the journal will also be available electronically for the first time via Cambridge Journals Online (CJO). Starting 2010, both current content and the full archive, dating back to 1954, will be digitised and reproduced as high-resolution, searchable PDFs.

Mathematika will be available twice a year in both print and electronically via Cambridge Journals Online.
