CARL, SPARC launch Canadian initiative to boost campus digital repository use - 11 Mar 2009 The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and the Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) have announced a new educational initiative called ‘Greater Reach for Your Research’. The campaign encourages Canadian authors to use their campus digital repository to increase the use and impact of their research outputs.
The initiative features a new brochure and matching web portal, a slidecast on the importance of retaining copyright, the SPARC Canadian Author Addendum and updated brochure. The other resources available include a video interview with Ernie Ingles, Vice Provost and Chief Librarian at the University of Alberta. Faculty associations and repository advocates are invited to print or order copies of the brochure and access the suite of resources available through the CARL and SPARC websites. A US version of the brochure will be released in 2009.
The campaign lays emphasis on the practical benefits of repositories - such as more exposure for researchers’ articles, universal access to research literature and long-term preservation. Citation research has reportedly shown that articles posted to a digital repository are cited more frequently than articles appearing only in journals.
Digital repositories are online archives maintained by universities, colleges, funding agencies, and other institutions to collect, preserve and provide unrestricted online access to all types of institutional research outputs. These include published articles and research data, and are seen as key components of the emerging digital research infrastructure.

E-Publishing activities to fare well despite recession, says report - 11 Mar 2009 Media industry forecast and analysis firm Simba Information has released a report according to which global recession will lead to slower growth in professional publishing markets through 2010. However, e-publishing activities, such as online services, abstracting and indexing tools, electronic databases and Web directories, will plow through the economic doldrums.
According to Simba's Global Professional Publishing 2008-2009, the global professional publishing market has been growing in the 4.5 percent to 6.5 percent range for the past several years. Simba Information projects that the market will grow at a compound annual rate of only 3.6 percent through 2011. E-publishing services will fare much better than the average, while medical publishing - the second largest segment after legal publishing - will suffer from poor advertising sales particularly from the slumping pharmaceutical industry.
The newly released Simba report provides market sizing, strategic and competitive analysis, forecasts and critical insight into the markets for scientific, technical, medical, business and legal publishing. The report gives the financial outlook for the global professional publishing market based on specific research and analysis of the leading competitors and market performance in six content delivery categories.

UK study moots formation of cooperative service to store research data - 06 Mar 2009 A recent gathering of research, education and IT experts reportedly found that there is a need for a UK Research Data Service (UKRDS), based on a ‘cooperative service model’. The service would build on existing good practice in data management and fill gaps in the UK’s provision. More than 700 researchers at four case study universities were interviewed as part of the investigations. Nearly 200 delegates gathered in London recently to debate the issue.
The study was funded under the HEFCE shared services programme with additional funding from JISC, Research Libraries UK and the Russell Universities Group IT directors.
According to JISC representatives, institutional repositories could fill gaps left by the lack of suitable subject repositories. If subject repositories in all disciplines cannot be created, a horizontal vision across institutional and disciplinary repositories would be required, they stated. This would include subject practitioner advice on what to save and how.
Most of the subject-specific data centres were established by researchers in response to a research need, the conference heard. Examples include protein and genome databases maintained by the European Bioinformatics Institute and environmental data centres managed by the Natural Environment Research Council. The initiative behind the UKRDS study, however, came largely from the library and information communities.
The meeting also heard that researchers are often not good at managing data beyond the lifetime of a funded project. Generally, data is never fully analysed by the researchers who generate it. Most data is stored locally if no national or international facility is available. It was also found that while 88 percent of researchers already share data, even if only with collaborators or through informal peer exchange networks, 43 percent say they would like to access others’ data.

Deep Web Technologies launches advanced alerts service in Scitopia.org - 06 Mar 2009 Federated search services provider Deep Web Technologies, US, has launched their advanced alerts service in Scitopia.org, the free, federated search portal powered by Deep Web Technologies’ Explorit Research Accelerator. Scitopia.org Alerts delivers science and engineering content of interest to users through email and RSS feeds automatically, rather than forcing users to come to scitopia.org to perform searches themselves. The service makes it easy for users to stay current on research from the deep web libraries of major science and engineering societies, such as IEEE, Institute of Physics, American Physical Society as well as patent databases and government sources.
Scitopia.org, designed for direct access to the best in science and technology research, provides a one-stop search interface to more than three and a half million peer-reviewed articles and conference proceedings, fifty million patents, and full-text documents from government websites. Founded in 2007, scitopia.org spans 350 years of data, federating the scholarly content from twenty-one societies, and six government information sources. Each search is run against all or selected digital collections. Results are then aggregated, de-duplicated and ranked for maximum search efficiency.
Scitopia.org Alerts service automatically runs searches requested by users on the terms and those societies they choose to include in their search. The technology “remembers” which search results have already been delivered to the user and sends only new results, making it a powerful tool for researchers to identify new publications and articles in their areas of interest. Alerts can be created for any term or field, including author, abstracts, and affiliations. The technology also recognizes institutional subscriptions to society content and automatically authenticates those users, allowing them to click through to the full text from the Alert. Others can purchase full text on a pay-per-view basis.

Scotland’s shared digital library initiative to widen access for educational institutions - 10 Mar 2009 Scotland’s university researchers are set to benefit from Scottish Higher Education Digital Library (SHEDL), a shared digital library that will widen access to over 1,500 specialist journals and publications. JISC Collections negotiated this pilot scheme, which will be led by the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries. Three academic publishers - Cambridge University Press, the American Chemical Society and Springer - have already signed up.
The initiative, seen to be the first of its kind in the UK, is also expected to encourage collaboration between institutions as it gives researchers access to journals on the fringes of their chosen disciplines. SHEDL is considered vital to the development of Scottish-based research, over half of which was rated internationally excellent or world-leading in last month’s Research Assessment Exercise.
SHEDL has been backed by all of Scotland’s higher education institutions, who hope it will support research, learning and teaching. It is also expected to stimulate research both across different disciplines and between institutions.

Open Access Week builds on the momentum generated by the 120 campuses in 27 countries that celebrated Open Access Day in 2008.
The now-annual event, expanded from one day to a full week, presents an opportunity to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access to research, including access policies from all types of research funders, within the international higher education community and the general public. Key new contributors, who will help to enhance and expand the global reach of this popular event in 2009 include eIFL.net (Electronic Information for Libraries), OASIS (the Open Access Scholarly Information Sourcebook); and the Open Access Directory (OAD).
This year’s programme will highlight educational resources on Open Access that local hosts can use to customise their own programmes to suit local audiences and time zones. OASIS will serve as the centerpiece of the 2009 programme, delivering resources for every constituency and every awareness level. The Open Access Directory will again provide an index of participants on five continents, as well as their growing clearinghouse for all OA resources. Through the collaborative functionality of the two initiatives, OA videos, briefing papers, podcasts, slideshows, posters and other informative tools will be drawn from all over the Web to be highlighted during Open Access Week.
The organisers will also work with registrants to develop a variety of sample programme tracks, such as ‘Administrator’s introduction to campus open-access policies and funds,’ ‘OA 101,’ and ‘Complying with the NIH public access policy’ that take full advantage of available tools.

American Business Media launches whitepaper on latest tech for B2B media firms - 10 Mar 2009 American Business Media, an association of business information providers, has announced the availability of a new whitepaper that helps B2B media companies leverage Web 2.0 and social media tactics and technologies. Created by ABM’s Media Marketing Committee, the whitepaper is entitled “Leveraging Web 2.0 for B2B Media – Ideas & Best Practices,”. It focuses on education for those B2B media executives who are not familiar with many of the latest Web 2.0 applications or whose companies have been slow to implement them.
A survey of ABM members, in conjunction with the whitepaper, shows that only 15 percent consider themselves ‘pros’ on the latest Web 2.0 technology, while 54 percent say they are actively trying to learn more. The same survey shows some interesting statistics in regards to how B2B media companies use Web 2.0 and social media tactics. According to the survey, the main purpose of B2B media websites is to increase reader engagement, followed closely by generating advertising revenue.
It was observed that executives with 20-plus years of industry experience – the leaders of many B2B media companies – are far less familiar with Web 2.0 tactics and technology than less-experienced executives. The survey noted that small-sized companies are significantly more familiar with Web 2.0 tactics and technology than their medium- and large-sized competitors. It was also found that respondents rank video, search content archives, and forums/discussion boards most successful at achieving their main goal of increasing reader engagement.
The whitepaper contains definitions and examples of various Web 2.0 tactics used by B2B media companies, including blogs, forums, podcasts, social networking, social bookmarking, video and wikis. It also contains a glossary of Web 2.0 terms and websites.
