National Health Service Wales gains access to latest evidence-based clinical information with DynaMed Plus
- 05 Oct 2018

NHS Wales Informatics Service has made EBSCO Health's DynaMed Plus available to all NHS Wales staff via the NHS Wales e-Library for Health. It provides access to the most current, evidence-based clinical information on thousands of topics and specialties to healthcare professionals. DynaMed Plus provides comprehensive coverage and current, relevant clinical updates, bringing vital knowledge to physicians and healthcare professionals at the point of care.

DynaMed Plus is updated daily to produce a collection of the most current evidence curated from more than 500 medical journals. It incorporates over 21,000 global guidelines including National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) guidelines. The Royal College of General Practitioners has awarded DynaMed Plus Accreditation as a learning tool so General Practitioners can use DynaMed Plus to support their revalidation and earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits.

In addition to including the most current and relevant evidence, DynaMed Plus has features and a structure to speed the time to answer for users. The bulleted summary of topics offers the most concise, evidence-based recommendations with easily accessible supporting references. Additionally, it includes a semantic search functionality and a "Follow" feature that allows users to set up alerts when topics are updated with new evidence and guidelines.

Physicians are relying on smartphones more and more, so the DynaMed Plus mobile app is free and available for Android and iOS platforms. The mobile app is designed to operate regardless of network connectivity to help overcome issues that physicians may face with inconsistent mobile service. DynaMed Plus will be updated when it is connected to the network but once content is downloaded, a physician can use the mobile app even if there is a poor signal or no signal at all.

Non-profit global library cooperative OCLC has signed agreements with leading publishers from around the world to add metadata for high-quality electronic and print books, journals, databases and learning materials that will make their content discoverable through WorldCat Discovery.

The inclusion of authoritative publications and educational materials supports libraries in service to researchers, faculty, students and information seekers around the world.

OCLC has agreements in place with 350 publishers and content providers to supply metadata to facilitate discovery and access to key resources. OCLC recently signed agreements with the content providers include: Begell House, Inc.; Captise BV; Digital Theatre; Edinburgh University Press; The Electrochemical Society; Knowledge Unlatched; Manchester University Press; Mango Languages; PLOS (Public Library of Science); and The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.

Metadata from many of these publishers will also be made available to users through other OCLC services, including WorldCat.org, based on individual agreements. Details about how this metadata may be used in library management workflows will be communicated to OCLC users as the data is available.

By providing metadata and other descriptive content, these partnerships help libraries represent their electronic and physical collections more completely and efficiently.

Available as a stand-alone service or as part of WorldShare Management Services, WorldCat Discovery provides over 3.5 billion records of electronic, digital and physical resources, including articles, books, dissertations and audiovisual materials in support of libraries and information seekers.

MDPI integrates Hypothesis open source annotation tools
- 03 Oct 2018

Academic open-access publisher Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) has integrated the open source annotation software Hypothesis for MDPI journal articles. Using tools available on article webpages, scholars can make public or private comments anywhere on the abstract or full-text HTML pages. Users can also highlight specific parts of the text, and all annotations will be linked to their MDPI account.

The annotation feature will initially be available for the journal Sustainability and rolled out to other journals in the coming weeks. Look out for the Hypothesis side-bar, which one can access by clicking the arrow at the top right of the page. Alternatively, simply highlight text and you will see options to annotate or highlight.

The ability to share insights, findings, notes and other information with peers or the larger community is fundamental. This initiative will further enable academic discussion and foster collaboration in the spirit of open science practices. MDPI is convinced that open annotation will play an essential role in feeding the cycle of research as it will promote the use of data standards and open frameworks.
