Universidad Científica del Sur to subscribe CAB Abstracts
- 04 Jun 2018

The Universidad Científica del Sur has become the latest university to subscribe to CAB Abstracts, a database of more than 9 million records of applied life sciences including agriculture, environment, leisure/tourism, veterinary sciences, food science and nutrition.

CAB Abstracts is the English-language bibliographic information service providing access to the world's applied life sciences literature. It includes CABI Full Text, giving users automatic access to over 410,000 international journal articles, conference papers and reports (80 percent of which are not available electronically anywhere else).

The Universidad Científica del Sur is one of more than 700 global institutions - including 75 percent of US land-grant universities, together with many of the premier universities and research centres around the world - that subscribe to CAB Abstracts to help ensure that students receive the very latest in scientific knowledge and research.

In particular, Universidad Científica del Sur will use the service to help its students follow their chosen career path in the applied life sciences. The subscription also follows the university's authoritsation to offer professional careers advice from SUNEDU - the body which oversees the quality of university education in Peru.

CAB Abstracts features publications from over 120 countries in 50 languages, including English abstracts for most articles, giving researchers the fullest global picture for any subject.

Oxford University Press joins Coalition for Responsible Sharing
- 01 Jun 2018

Academic publisher Oxford University Press has joined the Coalition for Responsible Sharing, an alliance of publishers and learned societies who are taking action against copyright infringement by ResearchGate. The Coalition for Responsible Sharing aims to prevent the illicit hosting of millions of subscription articles on the commercial ResearchGate site and offer alternative, sustainable solutions to help the research community share their published material online in useful and appropriate ways.

In joining the Coalition, OUP will serve legal takedown notices to ResearchGate for content that infringes its copyright licenses.

OUP is a strong proponent of broadening access to the research they publish in a sustainable manner and they do not take this action lightly. For the last two years, they have been working with other publishers through the STM Association in an attempt to find cooperative ways to work with scholarly collaboration networks (SCNs), including ResearchGate. Unfortunately, these attempts have, in this instance, been unsuccessful.

As a department of the University of Oxford, everything they publish underpins their mission: to support Oxford University's objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education. As a press, they take pride in this mission, which allows to enable, support, and facilitate research and scholarship. They believe that publishers and SCNs can and should co-exist to the benefit of the research community, with each respecting the other's contribution to scholarly communications and will continue to work with researchers, SCNs, librarians, and others to improve access to journal articles in line with the rights of their authors and publishers and the interests of the entire research community.

Elsevier and Egyptian Knowledge Bank sign national license agreement for access to SciVal
- 01 Jun 2018

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, has signed a national license agreement with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB) for access to SciVal, Elsevier's research management tool. The EKB now has quick, easy access to research data analytics of 9,400 research institutions located in 230 nations worldwide.

SciVal is a ready-to-use solution with unparalleled power and flexibility, enabling research institutions and government leaders to visualise research performance, benchmark relative to peers, develop collaborative partnerships and analyse research trends. Elsevier's analytic solution runs primarily on data from Scopus, the abstract and citation database of research information globally, covering more than 70 million articles, books and conference papers, and draws its content from more than 5,000 publishers covering 23,000 journals.

The inclusion of SciVal to the existing full-text content license agreement with EKB will help the ongoing Egyptian efforts to raise the quality of the higher education and better improve its impact on the society and on the country's performance in different fields. It will play an essential role in research strategy planning on the level of departments, institutions, and also on a country level.

California Digital Library and Dryad partner to advance data publishing
- 31 May 2018

University of California's California Digital Library (CDL) and Dryad Digital Repository have partnered to address researcher needs and lead an open, community-supported initiative in research data curation and publishing. This partnership is aimed at driving adoption of curated, accessible data publishing in the research community and will leverage the capabilities of both institutions and publishers to better align data publishing within researcher workflows.

The alliance pairs the strengths and assets of each organisation together to form this unique partnership: CDL's knowledge of institutional needs and technical capabilities with Dryad's strong relationships with publishers and well-established name within the research community. They will jointly work to develop the technical advancements needed to make data sharing, curation, discovery, and reuse a standard part of research practice across disciplines.

CDL and Dryad will convene institutions to gather input on institutional infrastructure needs for data publishing. They will also modernise the process of information exchange between the data publishing and journal publishing with enhanced publisher integrations. These developments mark the beginning of an extensive effort to better serve researcher needs.
