PLOS and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in deal to enable preprint posting on bioRxiv
- 08 Feb 2018

Public Library of Science (PLOS) and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) have announced an agreement that enables the automatic posting of research articles submitted to PLOS journals on bioRxiv, CSHL's preprint server for the life sciences. This collaboration between bioRxiv and PLOS empowers authors to share their work on a trusted platform before peer review, accelerating the pace of biomedical research.

PLOS is committed to enhancing the integrity of preprints and confidence in them as research outputs. PLOS will perform initial manuscript screening compatible with bioRxiv standards, covering scope, plagiarism, and previous publication, as well as other basic ethical and technical criteria. Articles will then post automatically to the bioRxiv server without the need for additional actions by the author. By allowing their submission to be posted on bioRxiv, authors accelerate the dissemination of their work and invite commentary by a broader community, which the PLOS editors will evaluate as part of peer review. Authors may choose to opt-out of this process when they submit papers to PLOS.

PLOS and CSHL also plan to work collaboratively towards solutions for preprint licensing that enable broad dissemination and reuse; the addition of badges to papers which signal that additional services for authors have been performed by PLOS and potentially other organisations; submission and screening standards in the biomedical sciences; and the implementation of new forms of manuscript assessment to augment or improve current methods of peer review.

The bioRxiv preprint server was initiated by CSHL in November 2013 and received major support in May 2017 from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. It currently hosts over 20,000 manuscripts from bioscientists in 104 countries and has a rapidly rising rate of submission.

Intermountain Healthcare selects Elsevier's Via Oncology to provide Clinical Pathways Solutions for Intermountain's Oncology Clinical Program
- 08 Feb 2018

Intermountain Healthcare, a Utah-based not-for-profit integrated delivery network of hospitals, clinics, a health plan and other medical services, has selected Elsevier's Via Oncology to provide clinical pathways for Intermountain's Oncology Clinical Program.

Via Oncology's Via Pathways helps cancer centers demonstrate the value of their care to patients, referring physicians and payers, by developing and implementing clinical pathways in collaboration with its network of more than 1,500 US cancer care providers. Via Oncology's Via Pathways includes evidence-based proprietary content developed by committees composed of leading oncologists that forms the basis of clinical algorithms covering 95 percent of cancer types treated in the US.

Via Oncology's evidence-based proprietary content is deployed to physicians and their staff at the point of care through the Via Portal, a patient-specific decision support tool that is integrated with the electronic medical record and provides seamless measurement of adherence. Via Pathways addresses more than 2,000 unique patient presentations, including expert-defined clinical algorithms and specific recommendations for all significant aspects of cancer care.

Intermountain's Oncology Clinical Program has a system role to ensure optimal cancer care delivery. Intermountain's cancer disease-specific development teams conduct quality improvement and cancer care delivery research designed to improve treatment options and outcomes for cancer patients, while reducing system variation and cost.

Elsevier recently acquired Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Via Oncology, a former subsidiary of UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), one of the nation's leading integrated healthcare delivery and financing systems.

Elsevier and Euretos announce joint pilot to bring AI-derived hypotheses into the scholarly dialog
- 07 Feb 2018

Elsevier, the information analytics business specialising in science and health, and Euretos have announced a joint pilot to enrich scientific publications with hypotheses that are generated using the Euretos AI Platform. The pilot runs in collaboration with the International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (IJBCB). Focusing on an open question in an article's discussion section, a hypothesis is created and discussed in the 'Next Research' group on Mendeley. The aim of the pilot is to assess whether these AI derived hypotheses can provide a catalyst for further scholarly discussion.

The hypothesis that was created using the Euretos AI Platform investigates the interactions between ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy and is available from the BioRN site.

The Publisher and Editors will select a recent top referenced IJBCB publication with an interesting open question in the Discussion section. This article is analysed using the Euretos AI platform, bringing in additional knowledge from the vast body of literature and data, to turn the open question into specific new hypotheses that can be validated by future research. The output of this analysis is collected and described in a discussion paper that is made available on the BioRN preprint server. Researchers who have published in this field will be invited to discuss the paper in a dedicated Mendeley group called 'Next Research' with the aim to help them find new research directions that are worth pursuing in their lab. All relevant contributions to the discussion will be acknowledged in a follow-up paper to the original IJBCB publication.
