Reprints Desk launches Open Access for its document delivery service
- 21 Mar 2013

Research Solutions company Reprints Desk, Inc., US, has announced the launch of a new Open Access (OA) filter for the company's document delivery service that is used by research-driven companies and institutions to acquire single copies of scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles. The OA filter sends customers to the source and supplements other Reprints Desk order filtering capabilities for subscription, token, print collection, and workgroup repository content, employing a dynamic process-driven approach to identify OA content rather than a data-driven one that may have limitations in coverage and accuracy.

Open access (OA) is the practice of providing unrestricted online access to scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles and increasingly other content types. According to the results of one study, Open Access is responsible for roughly 20 percent of the total output of peer-reviewed articles published. Other recent developments include Research Councils UK (RCUK) announcement that beginning in April 2013, scientific papers must be made free to access within six months of publication if they come from work paid for by one of the United Kingdom's seven government-funded grant agencies, which spend billions of dollars each year on research.

Corporations, academic institutions and government organizations use document delivery as a legal method for retrieving single copies of full-text papers from scholarly peer-reviewed journals when subscription access does not exist. Reprints Desk has held lone honours as the top-rated document delivery supplier in every document delivery market research survey conducted by information analyst and advisory firm Outsell, Inc., since 2008.

Reprints Desk ranks as top supplier in 2012 Document Delivery Vendor Scorecard Report
- 12 Dec 2012

Reprints Desk, Inc. has announced that it was ranked first in overall satisfaction and each category – breadth and depth of coverage, fair pricing and ease of doing business – in the Document Delivery: Best Practices and Vendor Scorecard – 2012 Update published by media, information and technology analyst and research advisory firm Outsell Inc. A free copy of the report can be viewed online at http://info.reprintsdesk.com/Portals/28841/docs/outselldocdel-rd.pdf.

The Document Delivery: Best Practices and Vendor Scorecard report updates the document delivery landscape that was last reviewed in Outsell’s 2008 report – vendor performance, the evolution of vendor offerings, and current document delivery practices and issues in the marketplace, The vendor scorecard was created using results from a September 2012 survey, which drew 156 respondents – 68 percent from the corporate sector, 14 percent from government, 13 percent from education, and 5 percent from healthcare.

Document delivery services are commonly used by corporations, academic institutions, and government organisations as a legal method for retrieving single copies of full-text papers from scholarly peer-reviewed journals that they do not subscribe to. Academic institutions are increasingly using document delivery when a quicker alternative to interlibrary loan (ILL) sharing networks are needed. Also relied on heavily for making ad-hoc decisions about adding new journal subscriptions throughout the year, the 2012 Outsell report states that document delivery is widely considered ‘still a bedrock service’ for information professionals that help their organisations fuel innovation through more efficient information acquisition and access.

Outsell Inc. is a research and advisory firm focused solely on media, information and technology. According to the firm, elite information industry executives from all over the world look to Outsell for trusted advice, bold insights, and confidential access to exclusive intelligence and decision support.

University of Utah, NPG join Labtiva’s pilot for access to single journal articles
- 28 Sep 2012

Software company Labtiva, US, has launched a pilot programme that seeks to provide libraries and institutions with affordable and instant access to scientific articles in non-subscribed journals. The first participants in the pilot programme, called ReadCube Access, are the University of Utah and Nature Publishing Group.

Labtiva aims to help scientists access any journal article they need, without having to pay per article or jump through other hoops. It has been noted that currently researchers rely on their libraries to purchase articles individually and at significant expense, spend research funds to purchase articles for themselves, or simply go without access.

According to Labtiva, researchers at the University of Utah no longer need to pay to read articles in any journal on Nature.com, including more than 50 titles for which the institution does not hold full site licences. Instead, the library picks up the tab as researchers download articles in a single click through the free ReadCube literature management application.

The library will pay only $5-10 for each download. Researchers can also choose to rent an article for 48 hours, which will cost the library $3-6. Articles downloaded through ReadCube Access appear as normal PDFs, but cost much less because they may not be printed or shared.

The goal for ReadCube Access is to establish a model mutually beneficial to researchers, libraries and publishers to expand access to research literature by supplementing existing site licenses. Discussions with other publishers and universities are already underway.

Version 2.0 of Utopia Documents web-enabled PDF reader for scientific content released
- 29 May 2012

Lost Island Labs Ltd (LIL) has, in collaboration with Academic Concept Knowledge Ltd. (AQnowledge), released version 2.0 of the Utopia Documents web-enabled PDF reader for scientific content. It is freely downloadable from http://utopiadocs.com and currently available for Mac and Windows, with a Linux version coming soon.

The Utopia Documents PDF reader seeks to bridge – while online - the 'linkability gap' between HTML and PDF, and make the latter just as easily linked-in to the web as the former. It allows readers, if they so wish, to experience dynamically enriched scientific articles. The tool is publisher-independent and is providing 'article-of-the-future-like' enrichment for any modern PDF (bitmap-only image scans accepted – they can be read with Utopia Documents, but without the enrichment features).

'Enrichment' means easy link-outs, directly from highlighted text in the PDF, to a variety of data sources and scientific information and search tools. It means – for articles from participating publishers – the possibility to export any tables into a spreadsheet format, and a 'toggle' that converts numerical tables into easy-to-read scatter plots. It provides for Altmetrics, whenever available, to let the reader see how articles are doing. A comments function lets researchers and students carry out relevant discussions that stay right with the paper, rather than having to go off onto a blog somewhere. It allows readers to quickly flick through the images and illustrations in an article.

With Utopia Documents, publishers and libraries can expect to offer enriched scientific articles just by encouraging the scientists and students they serve to use the free Utopia Documents PDF reader, and so make more of the scientific literature at hand. The tool is free – registration is only needed if one uses the comments function (for reasons of maintaining the integrity of scientific discourse, Utopia Documents does not allow anonymous comments).

Some journals, such as the Biochemical Journal published by Portland Press, and those published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, provide extra tags in their PDFs that enable Utopia Documents to extend its functionality even further, for instance by rendering pictures of protein structures into dynamic, rotatable, 'manipulatable' 3D formats. Publishers who wish to do the same or introduce similar features can contact info@utopiadocs.com.

Utopia Documents is usable in all scientific disciplines, but its link-out resources are currently especially optimised for the biomedical/biochemical spectrum.

In order to enhance access and the navigation experience for its users, while processing an increasing number of court decisions, SOQUIJ wanted to revamp its content management workflow. TEMIS launches next generation of Luxid, positions semantic content enrichment at the core of the ECM
- 14 Oct 2011

Text analytics solutions provider TEMIS, US, has announced the launch of the next generation of Luxid, its flagship semantic content enrichment solution.

Luxid 6 is a powerful semantic tagging platform which automatically extracts relevant information (entities, topics, events, sentiments), identifies relationships residing in unstructured data and facilitates links between similar and related documents. It optimises the management of Enterprise content through the capture and structuring of targeted information. The software also enhances the utilisation of content within an Enterprise's key workflows such as competitive intelligence, research and innovation, voice of the consumer and reputation management.

Luxid 6 brings unparalleled capabilities to governments, powering their mission-critical applications such as financial fraud detection, homeland security, and risk prevention. It is also projected as an ally for digital publishers and content providers, who design, develop and market ever more innovative, targeted and flexible information products.

As a complement to its existing semantic tagging techniques, Luxid 6 now features three innovative approaches to content enrichment which adapt to virtually any domain. Taxonomy Skill Cartridges streamline and accelerate the use of an existing taxonomy to rapidly enrich document assets. Rule-Based Skill Cartridges capture domain experts' reasoning through an easy-to-use interface to immediately apply it to content and Machine-learning Skill Cartridges replicate experts' tagging strategies after preliminary training on an annotated corpus. These three new strategies accelerate deployments while simultaneously reducing their complexity by taking advantage of existing enterprise assets (i.e., taxonomies, domain knowledge and annotated corpus).

Version 6 of Luxid optimizes the knowledge extraction process, seeks to make annotator developments more efficient and brings semantic metadata to the whole information system, thereby representing a key milestone towards the mainstream acceptance of semantic content enrichment. It is currently available through TEMIS and its network of partners and system integrators.

National Agricultural Library selects TEMIS to automate indexing process
- 28 Sep 2011

Text analytics solutions provider TEMIS, US, has announced that it was awarded a major contract by the National Agricultural Library (NAL), one of the world's largest agricultural information collections, part of the United States Department of Agriculture. Under the deal, NAL will use Luxid for Content Enrichment to automatically index hundreds of thousands of documents annually.

To keep up with the escalating demand for its information services, NAL has acquired through TEMIS an automated indexing software that vastly expands the potential number of articles indexed each year while simultaneously achieving a high level of quality.

TEMIS will tackle NAL's indexing challenge with its Luxid for Content Enrichment Platform. The Text Mining platform turns unstructured data into actionable knowledge, enabling advanced content enrichment for indexing, enhanced search and navigation, content analysis and strategic information discovery. Luxid's automated categorisation process will rely on the NAL Agricultural Thesaurus (NALT), a key component of the library's organisational tools.

With Luxid for Content Enrichment driving its indexing processes, NAL expects significant productivity gains. Six in-house indexers will be able to index by subject 300,000 articles per year, a four-fold increase over the current average indexer's level of production. The assignment of subject retrieval terms in NAL's AGRICOLA Index is currently performed entirely by human indexers who average 75,000 articles each year.

EPiServer launches MobilePack tools for fast and easy mobile web apps creation
- 08 Aug 2011

Web content management (WCM) platforms provider EPiServer, UK, has announced the launch of MobilePack for EPiServer, a set of templates and software for creating mobile web apps that extend a brand's reach to web users. With the introduction of MobilePack, EPiServer expects to empower marketers to quickly and efficiently extend their primary online presence, whether that is a website, e-commerce site or branded social community, to smartphones and tablets.

Marketers today are seen to understand the benefits of making their brands more mobile, but many fear the complexity and expense of entering the mobile channel. MobilePack is said to reduce marketers' reliance on their IT staff while enabling content reuse across multiple channels. Based on HTML 5, MobilePack allows marketers to use familiar analytics tools to understand visitor preferences before investing in more expensive native apps. Its key features include the ability to add new content specific to the mobile context and device-specific preview. Also, developers can customise it and create richer mobile experiences.

By 2015, eMarketer estimates that more than 135 million Americans will access the web via their mobile devices. Still, only a fraction of websites are optimised for mobile devices. In order to have an effective mobile web application, marketers need to develop a contextual mobile strategy to extend the reach of sales, delivery and services to reach new customers and retain brand loyalty with existing ones.

MobilePack is available immediately. EPiServer plans to continuously build more features and functionality in subsequent releases. Developer specialists can learn more by downloading implementation requirements and device preview onEPiServer.com.

American Institute of Physics selects RSuite content management system

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has selected RSuite, a content management system for publishers from Really Strategies, Inc. AIP is a not-for-profit corporation that works to advance and diffuse knowledge of the physical sciences and its applications to human welfare. A pioneer in digital publishing, AIP is also one of the world's largest publishers of physics journals and produces the publications of more than 25 scientific and engineering societies.

Prior to RSuite, AIP did not have a content management system and managed its vast amount of content via a combination of home-grown applications and file systems. AAAS to work with HighWire Press and TEMIS to enhance search experience and linking of content
- 08 Apr 2011

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has announced its decision to work with its ePublishing partner, HighWire Press, and US-based semantic content enrichment solutions provider TEMIS to offer a new, integrated, semantically fueled digital publishing programme.

AAAS is the publisher of the renowned scientific journal Science. The goal of this strategic project is an enhanced online destination incorporating the content of the Science family of websites, and a number of other digital assets under the AAAS umbrella. The AAAS project is part of a larger undertaking touching many areas of AAAS' business, including the broad rubric of content enrichment.

TEMIS provides an enterprise-wide solution in content enrichment that can be extended to a variety of digital assets. The company's solution for Semantic Content Enrichment, Luxid, will play a pivotal role in AAAS's plans to better align advertising and marketing activities with its editorial products, improve linkage of a variety of content, enhance search across its daily workflow and archives, and ultimately drive membership and revenues. Luxid automates the semantic enrichment of unstructured content, producing metadata that help search engines return more relevant results. It creates 'facets' which are used to further explore the search engine's results. Luxid also connects content, creating a network of semantic ties between documents. This enables the suggesting of related and similar documents, furthering the process of knowledge recommendation.

HighWire has offered semantically-driven features and services for publishers for over 10 years. HighWire facilitates discoverability both through their long-standing, custom taxonomic and development efforts and through the integration of third party solutions, such as TEMIS.

MadCap launches version 7.0 of multi-channel publishing software, Flare
- 02 Mar 2011

MadCap Software, Inc., a US-based multi-channel content authoring and showcase company for Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft XPS, has announced the launch of version 7.0 of MadCap Flare. The company's XML-based Flare application is claimed to be the industry's only multi-channel software application for natively publishing documentation to the web, mobile devices, desktops and print.

MadCap Flare 7.0 is projected to expand the app's leadership in mobile-accessible documentation with another industry first - support for creating and publishing Quick Response (QR) codes in printed documents, which mobile devices can then scan to access searchable, interactive content on the web. Also new in Flare 7.0 are direct integration with Microsoft SharePoint and Apache Subversion, enhanced support for government accessibility standards, support for vector graphics, and new features for equation editing and publishing.

With the release of Flare 7.0, MadCap will cease producing MadCap Blaze, the XML-based alternative to Adobe FrameMaker for long print documents. Current MadCap Blaze customers will be provided an upgrade to MadCap Flare, which features all of Blaze's print functionality plus the ability to publish mobile, web and desktop content all from a single tool.

With the latest version, MadCap Flare is reported to become the first authoring tool to include a built-in QR code generator that lets writers insert QR codes into content files. In doing so, MadCap claims to extend its leadership in mobile publishing and bridge the gap between static print documentation and searchable, mobile content.

Semantico and TEMIS announce strategic partnership
- 04 Feb 2011

Online publishing services provider Semantico Ltd, UK, and US-based text analytics solutions provider TEMIS have announced a strategic partnership. The text mining technology developed by TEMIS automates the semantic enrichment of unstructured content, improving its findability and discoverability by search engines and end-users.

In online publications, the resulting richer metadata can be used to help search engines return more relevant results; feed search facets to enable efficient drill-down in search results; and recommend related or similar documents and knowledge. By making online information products more compelling, semantic content enrichment helps engage, retain and cross-sell to Publishers' audiences. The technology can also be used to assemble innovative products such as highly focused Topic Pages that aggregate content coming from separate silos into a single product centered on any given area of interest. Richly tagged content also helps Publishers better align targeted advertising with the relevant audience.

Through this partnership, Semantico will offer a service that will allow a wide range of companies, including medium-sized and smaller publishers using Semantico's publishing software, to make the most of this technology to add value to their content much in the same way large publishers are already doing.

Open Text Corporation launches semantic navigation tool
- 18 Aug 2010

Enterprise content management (ECM) software provider Open Text Corporation, US, has announced a tool called Open Text Semantic Navigation. The tool is designed to help audiences naturally navigate through volumes of information based on the inherent meaning of the content and increasing web marketing and online search effectiveness. Available as a cloud-offering or on-premise, Semantic Navigation seeks to give organisations an easy way to improve engagement with online audiences.

The announcement was made at the Search Engine Strategies conference, a global conference and training series focused on search engine marketing, taking place this week. Open Text is a top sponsor of the event and is exhibiting in booth 214.

Companies of all sizes invest heavily to develop content they hope will boost brand awareness, sell goods and services, and increase customer loyalty. This content, however, can be spread across multiple servers and repositories where it is difficult for readers and search engines to find. Simple keyword searches assume the audience is willing to manually scroll through pages of results and hunt down countless blind alleys to find relevant content.

Open Text Semantic Navigation offers a way to improve the user experience. At the core of the offering is the Open Text Content Analytics engine. The engine is claimed to intelligently extract meaning, sentiment and context from content, and in turn marries that content to what a customer or prospect is looking for on a website. Audiences are expected to more consistently and quickly find helpful, valuable information with much less effort.

A complete solution, Open Text Semantic Navigation is designed to complement any existing website, independent of the web content management system used, either installed on local servers or as an online service provided by Open Text. With the cloud-based offering (currently in beta), organisations can expect to rapidly and inexpensively upgrade their sites user experience using a free, fully functional 30-day trial.

NPG implements RSuite for content management
- 24 Feb 2010

Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG), UK, has announced that it has implemented RSuite, a content management system for publishers. NPG publishes journals, online databases and services across the life, physical, chemical and applied sciences and clinical medicine.

NPG needed to replace several legacy production systems while still being able to leverage the investment in some existing tools, including MarkLogic Server. RSuite reportedly enabled NPG to accomplish this by facilitating the automation of its workflows. This in turn is projected to enable scalability without additional resource requirements, and allow for a more streamlined production process.

The publisher consolidated multiple content-centric solutions and uses RSuite for the posting of live online journal content to the web. During the implementation process, it was recognised that adding multiple journals into the production stream would no longer require additional staff and training.

RSuite is a browser-based content management system that seeks to facilitate the creation, management, re-use and distribution of XML, media files, and other document formats (Word, PDF, InDesign, etc). It is powered by MarkLogic Server and provides native support for XML content storage services; full text search in combination with XQuery; a full suite of editorial capabilities for XML and other content formats; content re-use at many levels; and editorial workflow tools.

Building information modeling (BIM) solutions provider Reed Construction Data, US, launched its latest BIM offering, SmartBIM Spaces, at the recently concluded AIA 2009 National Convention and Design Expo. Reed also demonstrated the benefits of its upcoming release, SmartBIM QTO, at the AIA convention.

SmartBIM Spaces seeks to offer architects a simple way to view and download BIM objects specific to their projects. It also seeks to provide building product manufacturers with a targeted distribution method to get their products in the hands of architects during the design phase.

SmartBIM Spaces uses Reed's SmartBIM content, including manufacturer-specific and generic BIM objects, and packages it by project type (school, library, office building, etc.). These 'spaces' are delivered proactively, allowing designers to view products within the context of a specific project and download the objects needed to complete their projects.

Manufacturers can use SmartBIM Spaces as a targeted way to market their products to the design community and promote their BIM objects. By packaging their project-specific objects within Spaces, manufacturers make it easier for architects to locate the products and information they need. Manufacturer-specific BIM objects are available through the SmartBIM Object Creation Program. Manufacturers can have their products modeled as 3D, high-quality and highly parametric BIM objects for use in designing a building or project.

In addition to SmartBIM Spaces, Reed delivers BIM content to the market through SmartBIM Library, SmartBuilding Index and Autodesk Seek (http://seek.autodesk.com/).

Bundling print and digital drives electronic sales, says study
- 24 Apr 2009

John Smith & Son, an academic and professional bookselling chain in the UK, has released results of a study proving market demand for e-textbooks and confirming their value as a new revenue stream for publishers. The programme is powered by VitalSource, an interactive e-textbook platform offered by Ingram Digital, an Ingram content company focused on solutions for digital content management, distribution and promotion.

E-textbooks were sold using various sales models, with bundled print and e-textbooks proving more successful than e-textbooks sold as a discounted point-of-sale add-on or as a single full-price product. Not only were e-textbook sales strong in the first semester, but these encouraging sales have continued into the second semester, it has been observed.

The study also revealed that titles available digitally realised a decrease in used textbook sales. Used textbook sales force publishers to compete with their own material, leading to more frequent new editions and, subsequent higher costs for printed textbooks. Titles available digitally realised as much as a 68 percent decrease in sales of their used, printed counterparts in a year-to-year comparison.

John Smith's chose VitalSource for its ability to support multiple formats, flexible digital rights management and interactive features such as the ability to search within text, highlight in the book, copy and paste sections as needed and the ability to share notes with classmates and professors. After a successful pilot in 2007, the programme was expanded for the 2008 autumn semester, with almost 100 of John Smith's bestselling textbook titles available in digital and print.

Reed Business Information-US opts for Nstein's digital supply chain platform
- 18 Feb 2009

Nstein Technologies, Inc., a Canada-based provider of online publishing solutions for newspapers, magazines and online content providers, has announced that B2B publisher Reed Business Information (RBI) - US has chosen Nstein's WCM (Web Content Management), TME (Text Mining Engine) and DAM (Digital Asset Management) to upgrade its digital content supply chain for its more than 80 print publications, and its associated 80 websites and portals.

Reed Business Information - US is a division of Reed Elsevier Group PLC. Its properties include Design News, Interior Design and Variety, among many others. RBI initially sought to simply replace its legacy CMS, but later opted to streamline its entire approach to the content supply chain.

Furthermore, under its legacy system, not all of RBI's assets were tagged. Nstein's linguistic solutions re-tag magazine articles to fit multiple categories. Tagging is the process of determining the 'aboutness' of content so it can be found easily and used in different ways by editors across the entire RBI network. On the front end, readers can find related content more easily, so they 'consume' more pages. That, in turn, increases page views and revenue.

Reed Business Information opts for EPiServer CMS for web content management
- 04 Feb 2009

Web content management (WCM) platforms provider EPiServer, Sweden, has announced that B2B publisher Reed Business Information (RBI), UK, has selected its content management system (CMS). RBI will use EPiServer CMS to help redevelop and manage content for existing websites and deploy new ones, with an aim to deliver news and content faster and more efficiently to its customers.

RBI reportedly carried out a thorough examination of the CMS available from some of the world's leading vendors and chose EPiServer. The decision was based on the product's ability to cut overheads on RBI's many websites, as well as its speed of deployment and user-friendliness.

After the initial look and feel of an RBI site is established by internal developers on the EPiServer platform, new sites can be quickly created. Each individual site's owners will be responsible for updating and uploading new content as well as quickly configuring page layouts with the drag and drop functionality using X3. This in turn enables individual RBI product owners to have complete control of their online presence.

RBI also wanted a Microsoft .NET solution because of the considerable investment and expertise it already has in this technology. According to EPiServer, RBI joins thousands of organisations and companies of all sizes around the world who are saving time and money by using its CMS to manage their websites and intranets.

The first native iPhone application to become available on the Unbound Platform is Nursing Central, a nursing application that provides up-to-date information on diseases, tests, drugs and procedures. Designed to take full advantage of the iPhone's visual and navigational support, Nursing Central also provides cross-links connecting related information and personalised bookmarking of favourite topics. It is the first of many iPhone applications arriving soon from Unbound Medicine.

Unbound's interface leverages the iPhone's Internet capabilities by delivering frequent content updates, tables of contents from just-published journals, and citations and abstracts from more than 18 million medical journal articles.

Wireless handheld devices such as Blackberry, iPhone and PDA are becoming increasingly popular among the academic community. Handheld devices are being projected as an ideal platform for mobile learning and reference, particularly in medical education and practice. In November 2008, Unbound Medicine released new 'digitally born' products developed in partnership with Merck & Co., Inc. The new products extended the Merck Manual franchise with a new database focused on the assessment and treatment of patient symptoms. Using these products on the Unbound Platform, end users can access the integrated content using all major technologies of the day - iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm or the web.

Earlier in October 2008, business information provider Thomson Reuters released the latest version of its Charge Capture solution - Clinical Xpert Charge Capture 2.0. Clinical Xpert Charge Capture 2.0 allows physicians to record charges and procedures via their BlackBerry smartphones and Palm and Windows Mobile handheld devices, regardless of location.
