IET selects CCC’s RightsLink to manage article processing charges for OA journal publications
- 30 Apr 2013

Licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), US, has announced that The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has chosen CCC's RightsLink for Open Access to manage article processing charges for all of its open access journal publications. This includes the recently launched, The Journal of Engineering.

Publishers must provide a seamless article processing charge (APC) payment experience for authors and universities while demonstrating policy compliance to funding agencies. As they collect APCs from their authors, publishers must manage publishing requirements from funders and offer licensing options at the article level that are consistent with a publisher's Open Access policies. Moreover, publishers must continually measure and test their OA business models – all with a focus on building a sustainable business. RightsLink for Open Access is a flexible solution that automates these processes.

According to the company, RightsLink provides the most comprehensive OA solution on the market. RightsLink for Open Access can be integrated with a journal-production system or manuscript-submission workflow, providing publishers a secure way to manage APCs, submission charges, page and colour charges, and author reprints. Further, RightsLink also allows publishers to offer 'OA aware' licenses at the article level from their websites 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, providing publishers with a complete OA solution from manuscript acceptance through post-publication licensing.

- 06 Mar 2013

The Intellectual Property (IP) & Science business of Thomson Reuters has announced a partnership to provide Syngenta, a leading agricultural company, with an integrated, enterprise-wide asset management solution. The partnership aims to standardise and centralise IP and legal contracting processes. It will support the development of integrated strategies, enable global collaboration across the different units of Syngenta and minimise risk.

As part of Syngenta's search for a new intellectual asset management solution provider, the company engaged the Thomson Reuters IP management consulting team as a partner in a thorough business needs analysis and solution development programme. The goal of this was to better understand current and future business requirements, and opportunities for operational efficiency.

The Thomson Reuters consultants worked closely with leaders and change agents from across Syngenta to assess systems, define a long-term vision, and establish a configured solution that addresses people, processes and technology. Syngenta ultimately selected an enterprise-wide solution including Thomson IP Manager because of its product's unique ability to link patent and trademark assets with contracts across product lines to form the "magic triangle" of IP-contracts-products. In addition, the team chose IP Payments from Thomson Reuters to ensure accurate portfolio maintenance and legal services from the Thomson Reuters Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) unit.

In a joint development project, Thomson Reuters and Syngenta designed a holistic solution that provided links between contracts, products and IP, improving the strategic deployment of legal, IP and licensing assets in support of Syngenta's growth agenda, as well as improving quality of information and portfolio-level management data. The new platform allows full visibility and management of rights and risks in a rapidly growing and increasingly complex business environment; where there are multiple dependencies between IP rights, licensing, contracts and products.

CCC endorses RIN’s report calling for cooperation in open access publishing
- 06 Dec 2012

Government policy-makers and private funding agencies in the US, UK and Europe are mandating greater public access to published scientific research. In this connection, Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a not-for-profit organisation and provider of licensing and content solutions, has announced that it endorses the UK-based Research Information Network's (RIN) call for cooperation among funders, universities and publishers. CCC has been helping publishers improve the author experience with respect to the collection of article processing charges for over five years, and welcomes efforts towards standardisation and transparency.

RIN issued a report last week urging stakeholders to 'work together to ensure that progress is as smooth as possible toward creating the systems and processes that enable the payment of Open Access article processing charges (APCs), while meeting the costs of publication.' The Wellcome Trust and Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) commissioned the RIN study on behalf of the Open Access Implementation Group. In the paper, author Michael Jubb specifically identified several 'core' functionalities that publishers and funders should require of any APC solution.

CCC's Open Access Solutions include secure tools for managing author publication charges, as well as colour charges, page charges and reprint orders. RightsLink users have 24/7 access to these tools, including reporting and customer service.

CCC is said to make it easier for publishers to charge different open access fees pre-publication based on variables such as author affiliation/membership, funding source and journal type; and communicate publisher-specific reuse rights post-publication to users seeking permissions for all content, including open access articles. Additionally, it helps capture valuable data about user interest in and reuse of publishers' open access publications; and provides the ability for publishers to add RightsLink to their content wherever it resides online, even in third-party repositories such as HighWire or PubMed Central.

CCC launches suite of new services to simplify licensing of content between rightsholders
- 12 Oct 2011

Non-profit copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), US, has launched a suite of new services to simplify the licensing of content between rightsholders and enable republication - the Permissions Acquisition Service and the Republication License.

These services were developed in response to the proliferation of new digital formats and rights standards, which have led to a dramatic increase in the types and numbers of permissions publishers need prior to going to market with publications containing previously published content. As a result, permissions acquisition has placed a significant burden on publishers' staffs, as well as their production schedules.

The Permissions Acquisition Service provides a team of experienced rights acquisition specialists who acquire the permissions needed to reuse content in new titles or expand the reuse rights when republishing backlist titles in new editions, formats or languages. This service offers detailed reporting that equips publishers with powerful planning tools, enabling the publisher to manage projects with confidence. CCC provides a record of the rights acquired for future reference, and streamlines payment to a single invoice.

The Republication License is an opportunity for both vendors and acquirers of republication rights to participate in a smart, streamlined licensing solution that eliminates the time-consuming, expensive back-and-forth of rights negotiation. In creating this balance, CCC's long history of successful rights brokerage is uniquely powerful. The Republication License enables rightsholders to acquire and grant rights directly on copyright.com. This self-service model balances the needs of buyers and sellers of republication rights, avoiding the costly and labour intensive nature of these transactions. Sellers benefit from pricing flexibility and automation to more efficiently manage operations.

Non-profit copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), US, has developed an in-app licensing toolkit for RightsLink Plus and Premium-enabled Publishers to add licensing to their iPad or iPhone apps.

On the iPad or iPhone, as well as for traditional online environments, RightsLink allows a publication's customers to conduct licensing transactions of all kinds without ever leaving the rightsholder's website.

The first installation of the toolkit adds a 'get permissions' option within the iPad/iPhone app for CHEST, the highly regarded peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). When a reader of an article on the iPad or iPhone version clicks on the share button at the bottom of the app, among the short list of usual options is one offering 'Get Permissions.' Clicking that link opens a CCC branded window tied to the RightsLink service enabling a full range of options to secure additional rights that is synchronised with an individual's account.

JISC Collections to bring out licence comparison site with DataSalon
- 02 Sep 2010

JISC Collections, an organisation that manages the acquisition and provision of digital resources for universities and colleges in the UK, will be working with DataSalon to specify and build an online licence comparison site. The site will enable librarians to view, compare and export the terms of licences expressed in ONIX-PL format. Launching at the end of 2010, it is projected to provide a user-friendly means for librarians to review individual licences, view two licences side-by-side, or compare terms across many different licences at once.

Libraries typically have many different licence agreements for their digital resources, but understanding their permissions and communicating these to users can typically be a difficult process when dealing with complex and varied paper contracts. In response, EDItEUR, an international standards group, developed the ONIX Publications License format (ONIX-PL), an XML Schema which provides a standardised way of expressing licence terms electronically. Partnering DataSalon with EDItEUR and JISC Collections, the licence comparison site project will further build on this work by making licences expressed in this format easily accessible to the UK academic library community.

DataSalon had previously worked with JISC Collections to create the Academic Database Assessment Tool (http://www.jisc-adat.com), a free online database comparison service which aims to help libraries make informed decisions about future subscriptions to online resources. It provides access to detailed information and title lists for major bibliographic and full text databases, and delivers service information for database and e-book content platforms. The site has reportedly received strong support from university librarians in the UK and worldwide since its launch in 2007.

The license comparison site will seek to repeat this success and provide librarians with an entirely new way of viewing and comparing the terms of different licences online. It will initially be launched with around 80 of the most common JISC Collections electronic licences in the system, and will be provided as a free online service to participating libraries.

With the addition of OUP, Inc., there are now over 800 publisher and author rights holders participating in CCC’s Annual Copyright License. OUP joins a growing number of rightsholders making their content available for reuse under CCC’s Annual Academic Copyright License including Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Dow Jones and SAGE.

CCC’s Annual Copyright License is a single, institution-wide license that provides faculty and staff with convenient, pre-approved permissions to use content in course management systems, paper and electronic course packs, electronic library reserves, research collaboration, and other educational purposes. Created in partnership with colleges and universities, the License supplements existing CCC licensing programmes available to institutions of higher education and is designed to meet the copyright needs of today’s academic institutions.

A wide variety of works are licensed through the CCC service, including in-print and out-of-print books, journals, newspapers, blogs and e-books. The Annual Copyright License has been adopted by all 15 campuses of the University of Texas system in addition to other academic institutions including Middlebury College, Walden University and SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
