Software vendor Microsoft Corp., US, and Compal Electronics, Inc. have signed a patent agreement that provides broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for Compal’s tablets, mobile phones, e-readers and other consumer devices running the Android or Chrome Platform.

While the contents of the agreement have not been disclosed, the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from Compal under the agreement.

The patent agreement is another example of the important role IP plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant IT ecosystem. IEEE publishes more than 150 journals and 1,000 conference proceedings titles each year and maintains over 3,400 technical standards. At CCC, he will be responsible for driving the technology vision and the implementation of all software systems. Software vendor Microsoft Corp., US, and Wistron Corp have executed a patent agreement. The deal provides broad coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio for Wistron's tablets, mobile phones, e-readers and other consumer devices running the Android or Chrome platform. Wistron Corp is an ODM (original design manufacturer) providing support services related to design, manufacturing, and after-sales service for information and communication technology (ICT) products.

Although the contents of the agreement have not been disclosed, the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from Wistron under the agreement.

The service complements academic institutions' Interlibrary Loan (ILL) borrowing services by providing immediate fulfillment of full-text articles from unsubscribed journals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through a single, cost-effective and easy-to-use application, integrated directly into a user's workflow.

'Get It Now' was developed with the participation of The California State University system, one of the largest university systems in the world, and the Information Delivery Services (IDS) Project at The State University of New York at Geneseo. It includes content from leading journal publishers, including Elsevier, John Wiley & Sons, Wolters Kluwer, Nature Publishing Group and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Additional publishers are being added on an ongoing basis.

If patrons wish to read articles from a journal not currently subscribed to by their institution's library, they can either choose to borrow the articles via traditional ILL or click the 'Get It Now' link within their search results and have the content emailed to them. Average turnaround time for 'Get It Now' articles is less than five minutes.

Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a not-for-profit organisation providing copyright licensing solutions, has announced the appointment of the just-retired US Register of Copyrights, Marybeth Peters, to its Board of Directors. The announcement was made by CCC CEO, Tracey Armstrong.

Marybeth Peters became the United States Register of Copyrights on August 7, 1994. From 1983 to 1994 she was policy planning adviser to the register. She also served as acting general counsel of the Copyright Office and as chief of both the Examining and Information and Reference divisions. Peters is a frequent speaker on copyright issues.

With Marybeth's appointment, CCC seeks to continue to expand its expertise in copyright policy matters. Having recently hosted IFRRO's annual meeting and a successful copyright policy event on Capitol Hill, CCC will continue to expand its efforts in copyright policy matters through its bi-annual OnCopyright leadership symposium and future events.

CCC advocates the responsible use of content while providing the expertise to make it simple to do so through licensing technology, certification programmes, webinars, regional workshops and more for authors, publishers, corporations and academic institutions. In September 2010, CCC announced the opening of its European subsidiary, RightsDirect.

To better meet the needs of multinational corporate customers, CCC has hired Kim Zwollo as General Manager; Victoriano Colodrón as Executive Director, Collective Licensing and Operations; and Kate Alzapiedi as Business Development Director.

Zwollo will be responsible for establishing and leading RightsDirect, building key relationships throughout Europe, and driving the overall growth of European corporate license sales. Prior to joining RightsDirect, he worked for Springer Science + Business Media in various international roles for nine years. JISC Collections, an organisation that manages the acquisition and provision of digital resources for universities and colleges in the UK, will be working with DataSalon to specify and build an online licence comparison site. The site will enable librarians to view, compare and export the terms of licences expressed in ONIX-PL format. Launching at the end of 2010, it is projected to provide a user-friendly means for librarians to review individual licences, view two licences side-by-side, or compare terms across many different licences at once.

Libraries typically have many different licence agreements for their digital resources, but understanding their permissions and communicating these to users can typically be a difficult process when dealing with complex and varied paper contracts. In response, EDItEUR, an international standards group, developed the ONIX Publications License format (ONIX-PL), an XML Schema which provides a standardised way of expressing licence terms electronically. Partnering DataSalon with EDItEUR and JISC Collections, the licence comparison site project will further build on this work by making licences expressed in this format easily accessible to the UK academic library community.

DataSalon had previously worked with JISC Collections to create the Academic Database Assessment Tool (http://www.jisc-adat.com), a free online database comparison service which aims to help libraries make informed decisions about future subscriptions to online resources. It provides access to detailed information and title lists for major bibliographic and full text databases, and delivers service information for database and e-book content platforms. The site has reportedly received strong support from university librarians in the UK and worldwide since its launch in 2007.

The license comparison site will seek to repeat this success and provide librarians with an entirely new way of viewing and comparing the terms of different licences online. It will initially be launched with around 80 of the most common JISC Collections electronic licences in the system, and will be provided as a free online service to participating libraries.

Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a not-for-profit organisation providing copyright licensing solutions, has announced that it has upgraded its online licensing tool Rightslink. Rightslink allows content users to obtain instant reprint and permission services directly on publishers' websites.

The new version of Rightslink includes new features that make it easier for publishers to provide their users with the ability to obtain reprints through their respective sites. Rightslink customer emails have also been upgraded to a new look and optimised functionality.

In addition, Rightslink also allows users to obtain reprint permissions 'on the go' via the iPad, Nook and other mobile devices that support JavaScript. With knowledge professionals consuming content on evolving digital formats and publications creatively exploring new business models that include the iPad and other mobile devices, Rightslink makes it possible for publishers to monetise content wherever it is displayed.

Thomson IP Management Services, part of Information services provider Thomson Reuters, US, has announced the release of Thomson IP Manager 3.1, an enterprise-scalable software application for intellectual asset management.

Thomson IP Manager helps companies more effectively manage their intellectual assets, automating the tracking of innovations, patents, trademarks, designs, licensing agreements and more. With the release of version 3.1, users will be able to pull information from their document management system directly into their portfolio management programme and easily share it with decision makers throughout the organisation. The new release offers full integration with Documentum and Interwoven, two document management systems commonly used by Thomson IP Management Services customers. It features several other system enhancements, including the ability to quickly propagate updates to large sets of records and to configure data entry forms so they are more user-friendly and efficient.

Thomson IP Manager brings together the necessary components for IP management in a centralised repository, integrating portfolio data, work flow task management and LDAP synchronisation with corporate user data.

Academic and professional literature publisher Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., UK, announced that it now offers its ePrints through the Copyright Clearance Center's (CCC) Rightslink service. With this development, the publisher seeks to provide customers with additional flexibility in the use of copyrighted material, which has become particularly important in a digital world.

Emerald content users will now be able to more quickly and easily reuse copyrighted material published in over 180 Emerald journals and 114 eBook Series. It will increase efficiency for the large community of users who wish to lawfully request ePrints of Emerald content.

This is an addition to Emerald's permissions service which is also available through Rightslink. Since January 2008, permissions have been delivered through the CCC's Rightslink online ordering system to enable users to gain instant information and guide prices direct from the article abstract page.

According to the company, the Rightslink service will continue to support authors who assign copyright to Emerald and will not affect authors' rights to freely reproduce or republish their own work. Emerald joins the growing ranks of publishers that have adopted Rightslink. These include Elsevier, Oxford University Press, Springer, Nature Publishing Group, The University of Chicago Press and Blackwell Publishing.

Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a not-for-profit organisation providing copyright licensing solutions, has announced that the Perseus Books Group, US, has implemented Rightslink, CCC's point-of-content licensing tool. The implementation is projected to enable Perseus’ publishers to obtain re-use permissions directly from the Perseus website (www.perseusbooks.com). This in turn is expected to provide independent publishers with customised functionality and customer service tools to handle their permissions business.

Perseus offers publishing support to independent publishers, whether those publishers are group companies, joint ventures or owned by third parties.

With Rightslink, permission seekers can expect to quickly find the content they wish to license, determine their specific licensing needs, and then follow through to licence purchase. According to Perseus, Rightslink has allowed its permissions customers more efficient real-time licensing and also helped the company to maximise the value of its content.

CCC's licensing services, combined with its web-based applications and tools, are claimed to allow tens of millions of people worldwide - in corporations, universities, law firms and government agencies - to use and share published information with ease.

Copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), US, has announced that STM publisher Springer has expanded its implementation of Rightslink on SpringerImages. Springer has been using Rightslink successfully since 2007 to instantly license customer requests to reuse content from its journals.

SpringerImages is a growing collection of about two million scientific images, tables, charts and graphs, spanning all scientific subject areas. It allows users to search fast, broadly and accurately through captions and keywords (both author-provided and user-generated). The platform provides bibliographic information for the sources, as well as one-click access to the full text, allowing users to delve deeper into the context of the image and research surrounding it.

Rightslink is CCC’s point of content licensing tool that is affixed by the rightsholder to digital content. The tool enables its customers to conduct licensing transactions of all kinds without having to leave the rightsholder’s website.

Copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), US, has announced that Oxford University Press, Inc. (OUP-USA) has signed an agreement to license the reuse of about 100,000 books and journals from the US and Oxford University Press in the UK (OUP UK). These titles will now be more broadly available to higher education institutions subscribing to CCC’s Annual Copyright License for Academic Institutions.

With the addition of OUP, Inc., there are now over 800 publisher and author rights holders participating in CCC’s Annual Copyright License. OUP joins a growing number of rightsholders making their content available for reuse under CCC’s Annual Academic Copyright License including Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Dow Jones and SAGE.

CCC’s Annual Copyright License is a single, institution-wide license that provides faculty and staff with convenient, pre-approved permissions to use content in course management systems, paper and electronic course packs, electronic library reserves, research collaboration, and other educational purposes. Created in partnership with colleges and universities, the License supplements existing CCC licensing programmes available to institutions of higher education and is designed to meet the copyright needs of today’s academic institutions.

A wide variety of works are licensed through the CCC service, including in-print and out-of-print books, journals, newspapers, blogs and e-books. The Annual Copyright License has been adopted by all 15 campuses of the University of Texas system in addition to other academic institutions including Middlebury College, Walden University and SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), US, has announced that it has been named to EContent magazine's EContent 100 list of companies that ‘matter most in the digital content industry’ for the fourth consecutive year. The EContent 100 list represents the best digital content companies as selected by a panel of judges who follow different aspects of the industry.

Copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), US, has announced that publisher John Wiley & Sons has selected Rightslink as the online licensing solution for its portfolio of top scientific, technical, medical and scholarly journals, encyclopaedias, books and online products.

Wiley will add Rightslink to over 1,300 journals, by mid-November 2009. With Rightslink, users will be able to obtain permission to reproduce Wiley articles (in whole or part) directly from the article abstract online at Wiley InterScience. Rightslink will be added to over 7,500 online books and other online content during 2010.

Wiley publishes scientific, technical, medical, and scholarly journals, encyclopaedias, books, and online products and services; professional/trade books, subscription products, training materials, and online applications and Web sites; and educational materials for undergraduate and graduate students and lifelong learners. Through Wiley InterScience, the company provides online access to a virtual library consisting of three million journal articles, 7,500 books, 100 major reference works, a dozen databases and the Current Protocols laboratory manuals.

Academic books and journals publisher Maney Publishing, UK, has announced that it has joined the NESLi2 SMP (Small and Medium-sized Publishers) collection. Maney expects the move to make its e-journals available for licensing to a greater number of higher and further education and research communities. The complete e-journal collection is available, as well as Maney’s five specialist collections in health sciences, materials science and engineering, archaeology and heritage, history and humanities, language and literature.

NESLi2 SMP features e-content from 22 publishers around the world which are licensed by more than 190 higher and further education institutions and research councils. It seeks to provide its members with high quality e-journal content from publishers not covered by the original NESLi2 agreements. The collection is projected to offer the benefits of negotiated JISC banded subscription pricing and the security of the NESLi2 model licence.

NESLi2 is the UK’s national initiative for licensing e-journals on behalf of the higher and further education and research communities. It is estimated to have delivered savings of $13.2 million to the community in 2009. The collection offers over 7,000 e-journals to more than 190 higher and further education institutions and research councils.

Copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), US, has announced that the American Physical Society (APS) has selected Rightslink to power its expanded author services programme. Rightslink is an online service from CCC that provides a content licensing solution for publishers.

APS has been producing journals since 1913, when they took over the operation of the Physical Review (founded in Cornell University in 1893). The Society currently publishes over 18,000 articles per year in nine different journals, covering all disciplines of physics and areas of study. APS has chosen Rightslink to automate their author services programme. This will enable APS to provide their authors with optimum service through the ability to easily order reprints and manage publication fees, while providing APS with better management control.

APS and CCC have established a close collaboration while implementing a robust Application Program Interface (API) between their systems that enables APS to remain in control of their business rules and the ability to rapidly introduce new services offered by Rightslink.

APS joins a number of other publishers who have chosen Rightslink to manage, systematise and better monetise their author services programmes. Rightslink is a proven solution used by publishers around the world to easily license and sell their content online to authors and other customers of all types. By integrating Rightsphere, users of these applications can instantly check the rights status of content against their rights database in Rightsphere without having to leave their content management workflow.

Launched in 2006, the web-based Rightsphere application allows librarians, researchers and other information professionals to aggregate all of their company's content rights at a very granular level. It also provides knowledge workers with instant answers regarding their rights to use and share specific content. Rightsphere has been adopted by various players in the pharmaceutical, aerospace and consumer goods industries and is being integrated into applications from application vendors in those markets.

US-based Cubist Pharmaceuticals is among the first customers to implement a complete literature workflow solution, based on its QUOSA literature management platform integrated with Rightsphere. Publishing solutions provider The Charlesworth Group, UK, has announced that 14 international publishers will benefit from additional gross annual revenue worth over $1 million through deals negotiated by The Charlesworth Group in China. For the seventh consecutive year Charlesworth has successfully negotiated individual contracts between the publishers and the National Science and Technology Library (NSTL), a consortia headed by the Ministry of Science and Technology. These agreements provide valuable new income from this emerging market, create strong online brand recognition and promote online usage of the subscribed content by the Chinese.

Working as local agents in China, Charlesworth expands the reach of society and university scholarly publishers by providing access to their online journal and database content to NSTL's end users, which total around 550 Chinese academic institutions, research institutes, and government departments.

In a similar move, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) announced a three-year contract with The Charlesworth Group and the National Science and Technology Library (NSTL) in March 2009. With this agreement, the Society seeks to increase international exposure to its journals Radiology and RadioGraphics.
