Dialogue between publisher and customer required to improve retention and renewal rates, says ACCUCOMS report - 29 Nov 2012 ACCUCOMS, a Netherlands-based provider of sales and marketing services to scholarly and society publishers, has released the findings of a new report titled 'Improving Customer Retention and Renewal Rates.' According to the report, publishers need to focus on establishing a dialogue with their customers if they want to improve their retention and renewal rates.
The report is based on a survey among publishers as well as feedback from libraries, and outlines several sales and marketing strategies publishers can use to identify potential cancellations and stimulate earlier renewals.
In September 2012, ACCUCOMS held a survey among society, academic, non-profit and commercial publishers. The questions addressed sales and marketing priorities as well as subscription renewal trends. The survey found that in recent years, a quarter of subscribers (26 percent) had been renewing their subscriptions later in the renewal cycle. For 2012, more publishers expected subscription renewals to decrease (44 percent) than to stay the same (39 percent). The survey also found that publishers mainly use email newsletters and printed materials (38 percent) to reach out to customers. Feedback from libraries described longer decision-making processes and an increased focus on usage statistics.
In the report, ACCUCOMS recommends using the decision-making processes to establish a two-way conversation between publishers and their customers. Publishers need to focus on increasing product awareness and usage, improving product experiences and providing solutions for issues before they turn into reasons not to renew.
The report can be accessed and downloaded via the ACCUCOMS website www.accucoms.com/report/improving-customer-retention-and-renewal-rates

3M Library Systems and Polaris Library Systems announce strategic partnership to integrate 3M Cloud Library with Polaris ILS - 12 Mar 2012 Library solutions provider 3M Library Systems and Polaris Library Systems have announced a strategic partnership that will make browsing and checking out eBooks simpler. The 3M Cloud Library eBook Lending Service will now be integrated with the Polaris Integrated Library System (ILS), allowing patrons at participating libraries to discover both physical and digital collections from wherever they are browsing - the library's own public access catalogue (PAC) or from the 3M Cloud Library applications. The new partnership will be showcased at the Public Library Association 2012 Conference, beginning on March 13 in Philadelphia, Pa.
This first-of-its-kind integration between an ILS and eBook service is projected to bring added convenience to library patrons, who will now be able to browse and check out both physical books and eBooks from one unified interface. The system will also enable unified account profiles, where users will be able to view status updates or receive notifications for all of their materials - both physical and digital. Additionally, with the integrated system, statistics on 3M eBooks will be collected in real time and included in circulation reports - a valuable asset for librarians.
The added ease-of-use for Polaris libraries and their patrons builds on the 3M Cloud Library's already well-established convenience and simplicity. By providing both digital content and in-library hardware, along with apps for borrowing and reading, the 3M Cloud Library offers a turnkey system for digital reading. Patrons can view content on a 3M eReader that they check out from the library, or can access the system on their own devices with an easy-to-install app (currently available on Android, iOS, and PC platforms). With Polaris integration, the 3M Cloud Library apps now will allow the patron to view and place holds on physical materials as well as easily check out and read popular eBook titles.
The 3M Cloud Library service is currently in use at 10 beta sites across the US. In April, general release installations will be performed for 30 additional library systems. Patrons of these libraries will gain access to content from a growing list of more than 40 publishers, with content offerings totaling well over 100,000 titles.

EBSCO announces enhancements to EBSCONET ERM Essentials - 07 Oct 2011 Information services provider EBSCO, US, has announced that EBSCONET ERM Essentials, the company’s e-resource management system (ERM), was recently upgraded to include improved navigation, hover-over previews, and more. These enhancements, a direct result of customer feedback, are designed to make this cutting-edge tool even more effective for the librarians who use it.
Improved navigation within the site provides the ability to maneuver through most lists at the detail level and easily find and browse related items, which helps librarians work more efficiently and with fewer clicks. Quick access to the relevant terms and conditions for a title or package saves time and provides the needed information in the right context. Once a title or database/package is found in the Collection Manager, the librarian can see the terms of use without having to link to the relevant license under which it was acquired.
In addition, access to information in general has been greatly streamlined with the introduction of hover-over previews on virtually every result grid. With frequently used elements shown in the preview, many key questions can be answered right from the result list — reducing the number of clicks and streamlining the operation. Numerous enhancements also have been made to features related to adding cost and license information to resources, including simplifications in how resources can be associated with licenses and the ability to assign costs to multiple fund codes or library locations. Processes have been made more efficient and more intuitive, enabling librarians to save time and provide a more accurate reflection of cost distribution.
ERM Essentials is said to significantly reduce the time librarians spend on data entry and maintenance, allowing them to devote valuable time to other tasks. It shares vital e-resource data and integrates seamlessly with other EBSCO Complete Management and Discovery Solutions, including EBSCONET, EBSCO A-to-Z, LinkSource, EBSCOhost research databases, EBSCO Discovery Service, and more.

Swets adds Impact Factor analysis to SwetsWise Selection Support - 20 Sep 2011 Information services provider Swets, Netherlands, has announced the successful implementation and release of impact factor analysis into SwetsWise Selection Support. SwetsWise Selection Support offers an unparalleled range of features that assist librarians in making more informed collection development decisions.
Usage statistics, subscription details and price information are combined into one clear overview and customers can quickly report on the price-per-use of any particular title. The new impact factor analysis allows for further, in-depth evaluation of a library's holdings, measuring the wider impact of content as well as the usage and cost per use.
SwetWise Selection Support's impact factor functionality helps the librarian to define the most appropriate titles for their collection by calculating the effectiveness of a title over a three year period. This is based on the number of times an article is reviewed, cited, indexed or used in other notes and proceedings over that time. By doing so, the librarian can determine and compare the influence of titles against those in the same field.
SwetsWise Selection Support's impact factor functionality utilises SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) data, developed by SCImago. This data is generated using a similar algorithm to the Google PageRank and the SJR is available both on screen and in downloadable reports. When researching a title, the SJR eliminates self-citations when excessive and provides extensive coverage of over 18,000 journals, including many non-English language titles. The results provide customers with a clear gauge of the visibility and impact of a title over the past 10 years.

GSA working with GPO-Google partnership to offer free govt. publications online - 08 Apr 2011 The US General Services Administration (GSA) is working with the US Government Printing Office (GPO) and GPO's relationship with the Google Book Partner Program to make popular government publications available for free electronic download through Google. The programme is making available 100 consumer-related federal government publications distributed through GSA's Federal Citizen Information Center (FCIC) on Google Books.
The public can view and download PDF copies of these publications on desktops, laptops and various e-readers. The FCIC plans to add more consumer publications to the programme. The public can also order hard copies of the publications on Google Books and through the GPO's Online Bookstore. The FCIC will coordinate delivery through GPO's Public Documents Distribution Center in Pueblo, Colorado.
Since 1970, GSA's Federal Citizen Information Center has been distributing government consumer publications from the Public Documents Distribution Center on topics like staying healthy, understanding government benefits, managing finances and saving money, avoiding scams and identity theft. President Barack Obama signed a bill into law in December 2010 renaming the distribution centre after former Congressman Frank Evans, who had gained Congressional approval for the facility in 1970. The centre is responsible for processing and distributing orders for consumer publications. Over the past 40 years, more than 800 million publications have been distributed worldwide.
With 2,200 employees, GPO is stated to be the US government's primary resource for producing, procuring, cataloging, indexing, authenticating, disseminating and preserving its official information products in digital and tangible forms. In addition to publication sales, GPO provides for permanent public access to federal government information at no charge through GPO's Federal Digital System and through partnerships with approximately 1,220 libraries nationwide participating in the Federal Depository Library Program.
The Google Book project and the company's settlement agreement over the initiative have been challenged by various publishers and associations. Last month, a US judge rejected the Google Book Settlement Agreement. He cited antitrust concerns and the need for involvement from Congress, while acknowledging the potential benefit of putting literature in front of the masses.

Association of American University Presses partners with NetGalley - 04 Jun 2010 The Association of American University Presses (AAUP) has announced a new benefit programme in partnership with NetGalley, a web-based service that provides tools for publishers to share digital galleys and press kits. In addition to reaching traditional reviewers and media contacts, university presses can use NetGalley to share digital galleys with the international rights market, librarians, booksellers and retailers, bloggers and professors requesting desk copies.
The cost of NetGalley for an AAUP member publisher will depend on the number of titles hosted on the site each month. Regardless of their level of participation, AAUP members are eligible to receive a 10 percent discount off the normal NetGalley monthly subscription rate. Environmental information and solutions provider Island Press is one of the first AAUP members to subscribe.
NetGalley provides the real-time transmission of digital galleys and multimedia press kits. Publishers can also allow readers to request a printed galley. A major benefit of the programme is the opportunity for readers to download secure, searchable, full-colour digital galleys to their desktop or to devices such as the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, or Kobo eReader. For university presses, NetGalley can aid in their desk/exam copy needs by allowing this process to be done faster, at lower cost and with real-time reporting on who is reading a title.
In addition to inviting existing contacts to view galleys, publishers can also list their titles in NetGalley's catalogue and approve requests from NetGalley members. NetGalley offers a range of marketing programmes to reach qualified readers via email, social networking, online trade advertising and at industry events.

Accucoms reports increase in demand in first quarter - 12 Apr 2010 Accucoms, a Netherlands-based provider of sales and marketing services to scholarly and society publishers, has announced that it closed the first quarter of 2010 with an increase in demand for its marketing and sales services. The announcement was made at the ongoing UKSG 33rd Annual Conference and Exhibition.
Since the start of the year, Accucoms has commenced new initiatives with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the American Institute of Physics, ADIS, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Nuclear Society, the Canadian Medical Association, Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group, the Geological Society of America, and the American Medical Association. The American Medical Association (AMA), an existing client of Accucoms' telemarketing and Latin American sales representation services, has recently elected to expand the scope of its engagement with Accucoms to include European representation.
According to Accucoms representatives, there are opportunities for publishers despite the challenging economic climate. Institutions are turning to consortia licensing as a way to reduce costs, and this can create opportunities for publishers that have been historically underexposed in the market, they have stated. It can also create opportunities for well-established publishers who are willing to be flexible. While there have been cuts, acquisition budgets have proven more resilient in Europe than in the US.

EBSCO to launch ERM Essentials following beta test results - 07 Jan 2010 Information services provider EBSCO, US, is set to launch EBSCONET ERM Essentials, which seeks to offer key features that librarians need to simplify management of their e-resources. The launch is slated to coincide with ALA Midwinter 2010.
In 2009, 25 library customers partnered with EBSCO to beta-test ERM Essentials in two phases with an initial round during the spring and a second phase beginning in mid-October. Feedback from beta testers has reportedly been positive. According to the company, users can discover a new way to manage their e-resources, eliminating the challenge of maintaining multiple e-mail chains, paper files, spreadsheets and other decentralised information spread across multiple departments and staff.
ERM Essentials is pre-populated for orders of e-journals and e-packages purchased through EBSCO with daily updates to ensure accuracy. It offers integration with other EBSCO tools that are already in the market. The product claims to provide librarians with a user-friendly system, intuitive design and a central location to manage all their e-resources. The often cumbersome job that most librarians face when trying to manage large groups of e-resources, such as e-journal collections, purportedly becomes easier with ERM Essentials. The product is positioned as the first full-featured electronic resource management tool that automatically populates and maintains more than 100 data fields for e-journals and e-packages purchased through EBSCO.

Swets launches ERM as a Service for librarians - 30 Nov 2009 Journal subscription services provider Swets, Netherlands, has announced the launch of ERM as a Service, an electronic resource management (ERM) tool powered by SwetsWise. The package is positioned as a solution combining select SwetsWise modules, designed to aid librarians with the management, evaluation and access of their electronic resources.
ERM as a Service seeks to provide librarians with a single, clear and comprehensive overview of their collection, showing what content they own; where their users can access it; and what licensing and rights options apply to it. Information professionals can also analyse the cost per use of their electronic resources – this is particularly expected to support the decision process during the renewal season and allow comparisons down to title level.
SwetsWise claims to contain the largest databank of publisher licence information available in the industry and automatically update and maintain the bibliographic details of thousands of publications, including price and status information. Having this information available at the touch of a button is projected to eliminate one of the key frustrations involved with purchasing an ERM solution - populating the system with data. This is expected to free the librarian to spend more time on the actual management and evaluation of resources.
The evaluation of acquired content is claimed to be made simple with SwetsWise’s ERM as a Service package, which supposedly combines COUNTER compliant usage statistics with subscription information into an easy-to-use environment. The customisable reporting possibilities included are seen to provide the librarian with the accurate and specific information needed to calculate the price per use of a subscription; to fully analyse their entire subscription spend; and to ultimately make better informed collection decisions in the future.

EBSCO partners with key consortia to make renewal of e-journal packages simpler - 22 Sep 2009 EBSCO and a number of library consortia are working together to help consortia members reduce the cost and burden of processing e-journal package renewals by using EBSCO’s RapidRenewal service, available via EBSCONET. EBSCO's RapidRenewal, an online tool for managing the renewal of licensed e-journal collections, is designed to ease the administrative burdens associated with renewing e-journal packages. By partnering with consortia, EBSCO is able to provide an e-package renewal tool to more customers for managing contract data at a consortial level.
Library consortia have been able to negotiate large content deals successfully with major publishers and offer membership terms and conditions that are unique to their respective consortium. RapidRenewal, developed in cooperation with many of the major STM publishers, enables libraries to process these licensed deals in a more efficient manner by incorporating consortial contract terms and limitations, title detail and custom pricing into a single online interface.
The RapidRenewal interface provides a single portal for processing the renewal of multiple packages while eliminating the cumbersome exchange of spreadsheets, e-mail and other communication. The library can modify and approve package title lists as the system enforces the terms of the consortial contract and ensures that renewals are handled correctly each year. Authority levels allow renewals to be approved at the consortial or library level, depending on the preferred process of the consortium or publisher.
As a result of using RapidRenewal, libraries within a consortium can take advantage of the negotiated terms and conditions, easily renew their collections according to their contract terms, and have the title-by-title analysis that is often needed in today’s shrinking budget environment.

Nielsen Book upgrades books ordering service, BookData Online - 22 Apr 2009 Nielsen Book, part of global information and media company Nielsen Company, US, has announced new developments and a significant expansion to its flagship books ordering service, BookData Online. The upgraded service will allow users to access one exclusive source of comprehensive and accurate book information with sales ranking alongside ordering tools; and functionality that provides a one-stop service for booksellers, libraries and publishers.
Effectively, subscribers to the service can search the Nielsen Book bibliographic database, and select and sort titles by BookScan sales ranking. Titles can be ordered and tools used to track these orders and to review order history. Real time supplier data from participating distributors allow booksellers to check price and availability information.
BookData Online will effectively replace the previous ordering service provided by BookNet Web as clients will be migrated to the new platform over the coming months. Both services are powered by BookNet TeleOrdering. The new service is seen to offer a substantial benefit to book buyers, who now have the opportunity of accessing all these functions in one service - login. BookNet TeleOrdering can then route all orders quickly and efficiently to 60,000 suppliers worldwide.
The enhancement to the service is projected to allow retailers to streamline their processes and decision making, and to improve customer service. BookData Online also allows booksellers to receive order acknowledgements from 17,000 suppliers, many of whom now provide this information via the BookNet Web Online Order Collection Service launched two years ago.
For acquisition and cataloguing, Nielsen Book allows librarians to search and rank by sales position to find the right selection. They can use this information to guide their purchasing decision based on which titles are selling and their sales position that week. Librarians can also download MARC records (direct to their desktop) in MARC21 or UKMARC to either fill gaps in their catalogue or a full file for complete catalogue records - from a single source.
Publishers can also use the service to check title records, pricing and information about forthcoming publications up to 12 months ahead, allowing them to plan their releases to achieve maximum sales and review coverage.
