IEEE-owned peer-reviewed journals now offer OA publishing options
- 28 May 2013

Technical professional organisation IEEE recently announced that all IEEE-owned peer-reviewed journals now offer open-access (OA) publishing options, the latest sign of OA's growth as it continues to transform the scholarly research publishing industry.

Open access allows all technologists and the general public to access research articles online for free, as opposed to the traditional scholarly publishing model that requires paid subscriptions. By removing these access barriers, OA publishing can help gain more exposure for new concepts that can advance research and scientific applications. Additionally, studies have shown that OA publishing may increase article citations.

As of June 2012, there were more than 7,600 OA journals published in 117 countries, according to a report from the UK-based Working Group on Expanding Access to Published Research Findings. IEEE joins the open-access ranks in a big way by adding to the total figure of more than 100 journals capable of accepting open-access content. Each of IEEE's journals is written by technologists for technologists, and many of those journals are considered among the most prestigious in their respective fields.

Under its "hybrid" journal model, IEEE's existing, subscription-based journals give authors the choice to publish either via the traditional model or pay an article-processing charge to publish open access. This approach allows authors to take advantage of the many IEEE journals that carry established Impact Factors, a measure of average citations per recent article in a journal. The large number of journals also provides wide topic options, which means authors should be able to find the right publications for their articles.

In addition to these hybrid journals, IEEE also offers four fully open-access topical journals: IEEE Journal of the Electron Devices Society, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, IEEE Photonics Journal, and IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine. IEEE also publishes a newly launched, fully open access mega-journal entitled IEEE Access, which publishes articles that are at the boundaries of traditional engineering fields or that cross multiple disciplines of engineering and thus don't easily fit into more targeted journals.

All of IEEE's open-access articles are available through its Xplore Digital Library database of articles.

IEEE Xplore Digital Library reaches three million documents milestone
- 02 Sep 2011

Technical professional association IEEE, US, has announced that the IEEE Xplore digital library recently added its three millionth document to its vast digital library. IEEE Xplore digital library claims to be one of the world's largest collections of high quality technical literature in engineering and technology.

'Protecting Smart Grid Automation Systems Against Cyberattacks,' which appears in the current issue of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, reflects a sample of the diverse technical disciplines represented in the collection. It took five years to grow the IEEE Xplore repository from one million to two million documents; and less than two-and-a-half years to reach this latest milestone.

According to IEEE Publications Staff Executive Anthony Durniak, the significant growth of the IEEE Xplore digital library is a direct reflection of the pace of today's multi-disciplinary engineering and technology innovations, and the fact that authors increasingly come from all corners of the world.

'Protecting Smart Grid Automation Systems Against Cyberattacks' was authored by Dong Wei and Yan Lu, two IEEE members from Siemens; Mohsen Jafari, an IEEE member from Rutgers University, N.J.; Paul M. Skare, an IEEE member from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Kenneth Rohde from the Cyber Security Research and Development Department at the Idaho National Laboratory. There are more than 2,500 smart grid articles in the IEEE Xplore digital library.

The IEEE Xplore online collection includes content from IEEE's own 151 journals and magazines, papers from more than 1,000 annual conferences, and over 2,000 technology standards. Its growth has also been aided by content from partners such as the American Institute of Physics (AIP), IBM, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and VDE, a publishing house for electrical engineering and information technology. The information in IEEE Xplore dates as far back as 1872. The scope of the collection includes all major technology areas including: aerospace, computer hardware and software, digital signal processing, power electronics, renewable energy, semiconductors, and wireless technologies.

As the collection has grown larger and more diverse, IEEE has developed a range of online subscription options for large institutions, small corporate workgroups, and individuals. Most documents can also be purchased online individually.

IEEE announces new features and content for IEEE Xplore digital library
- 15 Jul 2011

Technical professional association IEEE, US, has released new content for the IEEE Xplore digital library, including IEEE Redline Standards. The first instalment of IEEE Redline Standards is now available for select subscription packages.

Redline versions allow technical professionals to more quickly and efficiently implement updates to their procedures, products or organisations. A redline version shows the actual revisions made to an approved standard or draft when a version changes. Content added to a standard shows up in blue text and content removed from a standard shows up in red.

Redline versions are beneficial because the client does not have to read through the entire revised standard (a document they may already be very familiar with), but only the parts that have been changed.

Also new in IEEE Xplore this month are more rights and permissions links. This is the result of an expanded service agreement with Copyright Clearance Center, Inc., a not-for-profit organisation and leading provider of licensing solutions.
