Medical research funding organisation, the Wellcome Trust, UK, has called for tenders to find a supplier to host, manage and develop a UK edition of PubMed Central, the open access archive of medical research papers run by the US' National Library. Interested suppliers need to apply before March 8.
The WellcomeTrust is likely to decide on the tender by late July along with its British partners, the Department of Health, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.
Slated for launch in 2007, the UK edition will comprise three systems - a copy of data already held in the US version (500,000 articles), a procedure to submit and track manuscript, and an authenticated login for users to deposit articles. All papers will be preserved in standard XML format.
Starting October 2006, Wellcome Trust grantees are required to ensure that peer-reviewed articles are deposited within six months of publication, either in the UK or US version of PubMed Central. They can be submitted either by the grantees themselves or by the journal publishers.
