Metrics and impact measurement are becoming an increasingly important part of the journals publishing landscape. This course has a primary focus on citation metrics, such as the impact factor, and their analysis. It includes break-out sessions offering extensive hands-on use of the main citation databases - illustrating the types of analysis which can be derived from these data sources. The course also covers usage information and its use as a metric. Altmetrics that look beyond citations as a way of measuring impact are growing in importance and this course provides the background to understanding what they are and the issues around their use. The final session of the day debates the future of metrics.
