First Information Retrieval Facility Symposium held in Vienna -

The first Information Retrieval Facility Symposium (IRFS), a meeting of patent experts and business leaders, was recently conducted in Vienna. IRFS seeks to address the challenges facing all those who operate in the budding industry of patent information retrieval.

The main objective of the annual symposium is to sustain the development of standards, methods and solutions by bridging the gap between science and industry. The face-to-face interaction between information retrieval scientists and patent information professionals is to be the beginning of a continuous knowledge transfer for the benefit of both worlds and a sustainable innovation cycle. Interdisciplinary working groups, resulting from the symposium, will ensure a continuous dialogue and development process.

According to IRF representatives, there are numerous complex issues related to transferring knowledge between science and business. The IRFS seeks to identify the limitations in the Intellectual Property (IP) world and the methods and potential solutions from the Information Retrieval (IR) sector. The symposium focused on five main problem areas within the patent information search and retrieval domain. These include data quality, language gap, corpus enrichment, tools for information professionals and tools for management and research.
