US President George Bush has reportedly vetoed a bill aiming to increase 2008 funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from $28.6 billion in 2007 to $30 billion in 2008.
The bill includes $150 billion in funding for the departments of Labor and Education and an open access (OA) provision for all research funded by NIH, accounting for over $24 billion in extramural research. Despite the support of more than 50 Republicans, Congress failed to pass the bill with the two-thirds majority necessary to override the President's veto.
The two amendments were filed in the Senate on October 19 to strike or modify language from a Senate appropriations bill that would require NIH-funded research to be made publicly available.
The bill will now be sent back to Capitol Hill for a vote to override the veto.
