AIP redesigns abstract pages on Scitation -

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has announced changes in both the look and functionality of the abstract pages linked to its online journal articles hosted on Scitation. On the front and centre are a number of Web 2.0 enhancements that now infuse these pages with greater interactivity, and provide users with increased scope for manipulating the content.

Users are now offered integrated social bookmarking capabilities, which will allow them to store, access and share bookmarks from any computer and to use tags to organise them. Users can also sign up to be alerted whenever an article is cited. Future iterations will allow users to blog any article by capturing easily embedded, preformatted code for instantaneous posting to their blogs on various platforms including Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad and WordPress.

The redesign of the abstract views is also seen to have resulted in a page that is cleaner and more streamlined, with many critical functions in plain sight. Scroll boxes have been utilised for articles with numerous references and for articles with three or more authors. More new features will be introduced in 2008, including "widgets" for tagging articles and viewing any article's tags; commenting and viewing comments; as well as recommending articles and viewing any article's recommended articles.

The new abstract page view also provides an article information area. This displays the DOI; permalink, a link to the journal section where the article can be found; links to related articles at such platforms as ISI Web of Science and Scopus; and the history of the article (when it was received, accepted and published). Future article information will include number of times any article is viewed, downloaded, recommended and tagged.

AIP's Scitation publishing platform currently hosts more than 1,500,000 articles from more than 170 scholarly publications for 25 learned society publishers, in fields including physics, chemistry, geosciences, engineering and acoustics. AIP also offers a suite of publishing services, which covers every aspect of journal production, with complete management oversight from receipt of authors' manuscripts through print and online distribution.
