The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP), US, has announced the formal adoption of the ISMPP Code of Ethics, the full text of which is available online at http://www.ismpp.org. It is a voluntary code, with no disciplinary action mandated.
The code of ethics presents guidelines intended to assist ISMPP members in understanding their professional responsibilities, to advance their profession and promote quality clinical research publication practices. It includes general professional guidelines as well as professional services guidelines. Also, it includes specific professional conduct guidelines, such as 'publication preparation' and 'publication disclosure,' as well as 'intellectual property protection' and conflict of interest and appearance of impropriety guidelines. A cross-functional committee, composed of representatives from medical publishing, medical communications agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, collaborated for over a year to develop the code.
ISMPP is an independent, non-profit organisation that seeks to support medical publishing via open exchange and debate of relevant issues, as well as dissemination of practical information through conferences and training programmes. It seeks to support the education needs of publication professionals and to develop best practices that ensure the rigorous maintenance of all ethical standards for reporting the results of medical research.
