Non-profit intergovernmental organisation CABI, UK, and the IUCN SSC Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) are set to collaborate in a bid to expand the knowledge available on invasive species. ISSG, which manages the Global Invasive Species Database (GISD), will partner with CABI in advance of its Invasive Species Compendium (ISC) launch in 2008.
Under the deal, a small proportion of GISD content will be incorporated into CABI's Invasive Species Compendium, and in return CABI will help to enhance and maintain the GISD by providing funding. The funding will be equivalent to a staff member for the database team for one year. The GISD will be a key provider of biodiversity related content to the ISC, resulting in an increase in the overall availability of authoritative invasive species information and a reduced duplication of effort. These are key recommendations arising out of CABI's June 2002 expert consultation and the November 2006 Inception Workshop.
The ISSG is an international network of expert volunteers, organised under the Species Survival Commission of IUCN-The World Conservation Union. ISSG provides technical, scientific and policy advice, and facilitates the exchange of information and expertise via tools such as the Global Invasive Species Database, and services such as the Aliens-L list server and the Aliens newsletter. Also, it helps to develop capacity for effective site-based invasive species management activities through its role as the coordinating partner of the Pacific Invasives Initiative and through other contributions to the Cooperative Initiative on Invasive Alien Species on Islands.
