Helmholtz Alliance states support for SCOAP3's open access initiative -

The management board of the Helmholtz Alliance 'Physics at the Terascale' has expressed its support for the SCOAP3 initiative, which calls for free electronic access to peer-reviewed journal content in the area of particle physics. The initiative has proposed a commercial business model that is projected to boost a dynamic market while also benefiting researchers, authors, publishers and funding organisations.

The Helmholtz Alliance board has invited all members of the alliance to extend their support to the SCOAP3 initiative. It has also requested the members to support a transition to open access (OA) in particle physics on a large scale. This, it suggests, can be done by improving awareness on OA publishing in various communities and by persuading authors to publish in OA journals.

SCOAP3 has put forth a new business model for STM publishers in a bid to take OA to the majority of peer-reviewed particle physics publications. An international group comprising funding bodies, research organisations and libraries seeks to make peer-reviewed journals open access, such that authors find the process transparent and there is room for new good quality particle physics publications. Under the model, publication costs are borne centrally by the consortium but shared as per the respective number of articles of member countries.
