Oxford Journals, CALIS deal broadens China's access to scholarly content -

Oxford Journals, a division of Oxford University Press (OUP), UK, has announced that it has signed an agreement with the Chinese Academic Library and Information System (CALIS). The agreement is effective immediately and is valid until the end of 2009. Under the deal, a large number of libraries in China will now be able to access the Oxford Journals Collection. Institutions which opt in will be eligible to access the Oxford Journals Collection dating back to 1996.

With this agreement, Oxford Journals has become the first publisher to sign an agreement with CALIS since the consortium reformed its purchase procedures in August 2007. The deal gives CALIS' nearly 600 member institutions the option to subscribe at an affordable price to a package of around 200 prestigious titles across six subject areas. These include medicine, life sciences, mathematics and physical sciences, humanities and social sciences.

Funded primarily by the Chinese government, CALIS is a nationwide academic library consortium which seeks to promote, maintain, and improve resource-sharing among Chinese university libraries and other libraries and institutions.
