Current BioData opens new research and publishing center to serve global pharmaceutical industry -

Scientific data provider Current BioData has announced the opening of a new research and publishing center in Wales to serve customers in the US, Europe and the rest of the world.

Current BioData uses sophisticated computer search technology to scan the Internet for publications and news about proteins that can be useful to the pharmaceutical industry in developing drugs. The company's staff of graduate and post-doctoral biochemists and biologists evaluate and compare the information and distribute it electronically to researchers at some of the world's largest pharmaceutical corporations, and to academicians. The company will be hiring 45 graduate and post-doctoral biochemists and biologists for the Swansea facility.

Current BioData will be based at the Institute of Life Science at Swansea University, where scientists will work on its flagship product, the Targeted Proteins Database (TPdb), which is used by pharmaceutical companies in their search for effective new medicines against life threatening diseases. The database provides up-to-date information on how disturbances in the human body's network of proteins can lead to diseases such as cancer. Researchers in pharmaceutical companies therefore tap into this database to help them develop better and safer medicines to combat these diseases.

Privately owned, Current BioData is a joint venture with Geneva Bioinformatics SA.
