Healthcare information and education publisher Allen Press, US, recently hosted two workshops titled Publish Responsibly: Practical Solutions for Environmentally Conscious Organizations. The free one-day workshops focused on informing publishers about environmentally responsible methods and practices within the industry.
More than 40 professionals attended the workshops, which were held in Chicago, IL, and Alexandria, VA. Speakers addressed a wide range of topics. Joe Isaak, of the paper company SAPPI Limited, spoke on sustainable paper sources. Sarah Hill-Nelson, of Zephyr Energy and Bonneville Environmental Foundation, addressed energy efficiency and renewable energy. Sue Silver, Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Ecology, a journal of the Ecological Society of America, spoke on the society's efforts to "green" the Society's publications, offices and meetings.
Allen Press is planning a future workshop in Philadelphia in September 2008 on the subject of sustainable alternatives in printing and publishing.
