ChemSpider, an online resource for chemists to search, aggregate and mine publicly available chemical data, has invited open access (OA) publishers to design an interface (preferably web-based) to facilitate direct deposition of data into ChemSpider. The proposed interface should allow OA publishers to feed articles with title, authors, journal reference, DOI and abstract. The article will be associated with the chemical structures in one of two specific ways - extract the chemical names from the title and/or abstract and convert on the fly to deposit and/or associate with structures on ChemSpider; and allow the publisher to pass a series of SMILES strings, InChI Strings, molfiles or chemical names to deposit on ChemSpider.
The initiative will require some manual intervention until processes are optimised. The outcome would be a freely accessible structure and substructure searchable index of OA articles with links back to the respective articles. ChemSpider is already indexing articles so, with permission from even the non-OA publishers the service could use similar processes to index abstracts and make articles structure/substructure searchable based on titles and abstracts.
Any open access/free access publisher willing to discuss the possibilities outlined can contact ChemSpider's Antony Williams at antony.williams@chemspider.com.
