Healthcare publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health, US, has announced that TNM Staging Atlas by Philip Rubin & John T. Hansen has been awarded the prestigious BMA Medical Book of the Year 2008. Having already scooped First Prize for Oncology it overcame strong competition across all disciplines to walk away with the ultimate accolade. Rubin's Pathology Clinicopathologic Foundations of Medicine by Raphael Rubin & David Strayer also won First Prize for Pathology.
Three titles received 'Highly Commended' recognition. The titles are: A Practical Approach to Transesophageal Echocardiography, Second Edition by Dr. Albert C. Perrino, Jr., & Dr. Scott T. Reeves; Eyelid, Conjunctival, and Orbital Tumors and Intraocular Tumors, Second Edition by Dr. Jerry A. Shields & Dr. Carol L. Shields; and Diagnostic and Surgical Imaging Anatomy: Knee, Ankle, Foot by Dr. B.J. Manaster. In addition, two titles - Epilepsy: A Comprehensive Textbook, Second Edition, by Dr. Jerome Engel, and Hodgkin Lymphoma, Second Edition, by Dr. Richard T. HoppeD - received 'Commended' honour.
The BMA Medical Book competition is conducted annually by the BMA's Board of Science and administered by the BMA Library. It aims to encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing and patient information. All entries are reviewed by physicians and educators who are asked to consider accuracy, currency, originality, book production quality, and whether the title meets the needs of its audience. In 2008, the competition received 640 book submissions in 26 categories. 63 titles were Highly Commended and 23 first place prizes were awarded in total.
