Reed Elsevier to eliminate 68 IT jobs in Dayton -

Publisher Reed Elsevier, Netherlands, is reportedly drawing up plans to cut down more jobs as it moves work overseas. According to an internal memo recently sent to employees, 68 Elsevier Dayton IT jobs will be eliminated by the end of the year. The job cuts are in addition to those already disclosed by the company.

In February 2008, Reed Elsevier was reported to have planned 1,000 job cuts as part of its cost-cutting programme. The cost-cut plans envisioned the centralisation of functions such as human resources, procurement and IT across the group. According to media reports, the job cuts were expected to help Reed Elsevier shed as much as £100 million from its annual costs bill.

Elsevier Dayton IT employees design, develop and support Elsevier's flagship science and technology electronic products, such as ScienceDirect. The company employs 13,000 people worldwide and 3,000 in the Dayton area. According to an Elsevier spokesperson, the company cannot rule out future cuts in the Dayton area, but at this time has no more announcements.

Elsevier has been looking at outsourcing local jobs since last fall. According to a company statement, LexisNexis has plans to outsource about 290 company-wide positions this year and in early 2009, with 215 of the positions based in the Dayton area. LexisNexis announced last November that these cuts were coming as the company reorganises to expand its global reach.
