The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishing (ALPSP), the international trade association for scholarly and professional publishers, has announced a 24 hour residential workshop that will look at all aspects of the society/publisher relationship. The workshop, scheduled for July 9-10, will provide delegates with an understanding of the mechanics of outsourcing publications to a commercial publisher and successfully managing the relationship once it is established.
Publishing has become an increasingly complex and specialist business - one in which many traditional learned society publishers feel they have neither the resources nor the expertise to compete effectively. This workshop is for anyone in a learned society or trade association with responsibility for a publication or publications programme.
Delegates will be equipped to invite and evaluate proposals from publishers; understand the business models, contracts, and negotiations; successfully use reporting and metrics to develop publications and manage the relationship; and understand where the relationship might go wrong and what to do if it does. The workshop will provide a framework for society publications officers, CEOs etc to evaluate the benefits of working with a commercial publisher and develop an effective and successful relationship with them.
