Italian University Libraries announce participation in the Portico archive -

Non-profit electronic archiving service provider Portico, US, has announced that 30 academic libraries in Italy have begun participation in the Portico archive. The Italian libraries join more than 460 libraries from 13 countries in supporting Portico and digital preservation.

These libraries joined Portico as part of a digital preservation initiative directed by the Italian Coordination for Access to Electronic Resources group (CARE). Established by the Permanent Conference of the Rectors of Italian Universities (CRUI) in 2005, CARE was created to coordinate and develop access and conservation of electronic resources for the Italian academic community. CARE is managed by representatives drawn from the three leading consortia in Italy (CASPUR-CIBER, CILEA and CIPE) and from other institutions across the country.

An electronic-archiving initiative, Portico seeks to preserve scholarly literature published in electronic form, and ensures that these materials remain accessible to future scholars, researchers, and students.
