The London Book Fair, claimed to be one of the world's largest trade events for publishers and the book sellers, has selected India as its market focus for Spring 2009, for the first time. A key target segment of this fair will be service providers for outsourcing.
India is projected as a growing market for outsourcing publishing, printing, graphics and technical aspects. Indian service providers see this as a good opportunity for them to sell their outsourcing credentials to the world market. Twenty-eight Indian publishers participated in the fair this year. The London Book Fair has reportedly tied up with the Federation of Indian Publishers, the British Council and Capexil for a six-month series of activities until the fair in April 2009.
The British Council will handle the cultural aspect, tying up with writers and conducting workshops and inviting speakers for the same. Activities planned include workshops for Indian publishers on how to sell to UK booksellers; negotiating for rights trading; and providing booksellers and international publishers with an overview of the opportunities. Capexil has agreed to give market development grants for aspiring exhibitors.
Now in its 38th year, The London Book Fair provides a forum to meet new and established domestic and international business contacts in the publishing industry. It is attended by publishers, ranging from small to medium size as well as the larger publishing houses, all conducting rights business, export and national sales. Nearly 25,000 publishers from 120 countries participate in this event. The market focus programme is in its sixth year now. It has in earlier years covered regions like Eastern Europe, Spain and the Arab world (last year).
