AAP to hold Professional & Scholarly Publishing Division’s annual meet in Feb 2010 -

The Professional & Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of American Publishers (AAP), US, has announced that the 2010 PSP Division Annual Conference, ‘The New Reality: Disruption, Innovation, Relevance’ will begin with a plenary session on ‘Policy and Market Challenges – Critical Issues for 21st Century Publishers.’ The session will bring together a number of policy experts from the publishing industry to outline the major issues facing content owners today, and discuss the business implications of these proposals, should they become law. The conference is scheduled for February 3-5, 2010, at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. According to AAP, conference registration fee for 2010 is the lowest in five years.

Keynote speaker, James J. O’Donnell, Provost at Georgetown University Press will discuss changes in the industry. Additional plenary sessions include an Oxford-style debate of the proposition, ‘Current US Copyright Law Excessively Restrains the Development of Intellectual Property.’ The audience will be polled in real time (via mobile texting) in advance and upon completion to determine which team has prevailed.

Social Media has been in the consumer space for more than a decade fundamentally shifting the way people discover, read and share news, information and content. More recently there has been a surge in social media sites targeting the STM community. The Social Media and Scientific Research session will explore the benefits of social media for researchers, the elements needed to engage communities and the implications and challenges for publishers.

Concurent sessions include: Social Marketing 101; What Riches to be Gained from Enriching Content?; Retail Now Lead the Digital Way; Publishing Model Innovation: The Author Pays Model; and How Technology Is Influencing Traditional Publishing.

The Pre-Conference seminar ‘The Culture of Free: Publishing in an Era of Changing Expectations,’ scheduled for February 3, 2010, will discuss a variety of issues. These include the culture of free-from-copyright vs. fair use; publishers and authors rights vs. consumer rights; and the shifting paradigm of business models of content distribution. The seminar will present speakers and panels from both inside and outside the industry to explore the general question of ‘how do we compete with free’.
