Disability and Health Journal, a journal published by STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced the release of a special issue titled ‘A Disability Perspective on the Issue of Physician-Assisted Suicide’. The issue examines matters related to assisted suicide and disability, the legal considerations and the Oregon and Washington experiences.
Although public opinion in the US on physician-assisted suicide is evenly divided, about half of states have either defeated bills to legalise assisted suicide or have passed laws explicitly banning it. Only two states - Oregon and Washington - have legalised it. Journal editors Dr. Suzanne McDermott and Dr. Margaret A. Turk have assembled six articles from disability advocates and scholars who oppose assisted suicide and thereby add insights and background information to the debate. The entire issue is publicly available online via open access at www.disabilityandhealthjnl.com.
Disability and Health Journal is the official publication of the American Association on Health and Disability. Positioned as a scientific, scholarly and multidisciplinary journal, it seeks to report original contributions that advance knowledge in disability and health. Such contributions include reports of empirical research on the characteristics of persons with disabilities, environments, health outcomes, and determinants of health; reviews and theoretical interpretations of research literatures; and research on new interventions, technologies and programmes.
