Online information services provider Dialog, part of the ProQuest family of brands, has announced that Thomas Girke, Manager, Information Support, Library Services, at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), as the winner of the 2010 Information Professional of the Year by the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Australia and New Zealand Chapter. The announcement was made during the SLA 2010 conference in New Orleans. A cash prize of AUD$2,000 was awarded to Girke.
Girke was selected by unanimous decision of the judging panel for his extraordinary initiative in updating the CSIRO Library technology systems and in enhancing the research facilities for CSIRO staff. He launched the initiative to support CSIRO's new brand of 'Big science for challenging times.' The judging panel also noted Girke's commitment to the profession overall, as exemplified by his promotion of the use of information technologies within the library community and his professional association committee work.
Dialog has sponsored the SLA Australia and New Zealand Chapter Information Professional of the Year Award since 2004. It is part of the company's larger, time-honored programme of awards and honors for information professionals. The award is open to information professionals, such as public, corporate and government librarians, independent information consultants, knowledge managers and others, working and living in Australia or New Zealand. A panel of SLA Australia and New Zealand board members and Dialog representatives determine the winner.
