O'Reilly Media launches new digital service for publishers -

Publisher O'Reilly Media, US, has announced the launch of O'Reilly Digital Distribution, a new division offering publishers a complete e-book publishing service. With this move, the company seeks to turn its e-publishing expertise into a new business. The digital distribution service division will be led by publishing expert Pascal Honscher, an 11-year veteran with O'Reilly.

O'Reilly's new division aims to help publishers meet the demands and challenges of the 21st century. For publishers to succeed, their content must be available in multiple formats, distributed through many channels. The new service will reportedly offer free conversion as part of a comprehensive programme that will secure and store a publisher's digital files and market and distribute them into 24 digital e-book retail channels and in every format. Publishers can get their content into multiple eRetailers including Apple App Store, Amazon Kindle, Android Market, Kobo, B&N Nook, and more.

O'Reilly has invested in a technical tool chain that allows the company to easily open new markets and channels. In an interview conducted at O'Reilly's annual Tools of Change conference in Manhattan, Laura Baldwin, COO of O'Reilly Media, said that the new service grew out taking over the distribution of Microsoft titles in 2009. The company has seen its own e-book sales rise steadily. O'Reilly's Safari Books Online, a subscription service that gives clients access to library of digital titles, is its second largest sales channel.
