2010 AAUP Annual Meeting to focus on sustainability of scholarly publishing -

The Association of American University Presses (AAUP) has announced that the 2010 AAUP Annual Meeting will begin June 17-20, 2010, in Salt Lake City. More than 500 scholarly communications professionals are expected to attend the meeting, where they will share strategies on ensuring the future sustainability of scholarly publishing.

The Annual Meeting Program Committee, chaired by Greg Britton (Getty Publications), has selected 'Toward a Sustainable Future' as the theme for the 2010 programme. The first plenary session will address the theme as it relates to the future of scholarly communications. Others will follow suit, covering libraries in the digital future, new economic models for scholarly publishing, and the field of digital humanities. A series of connecting panels will further explore each of the plenary topics.

The three-day conference will host about 40 scheduled sessions. Subjects addressed by panelists cover a variety of relevant topics ranging from staffing for the digital transition to library acquisitions to the challenge of 'hyperabundance.' Two specialised workshops will be held before the meeting convenes.

The meeting will also draw on the resources of its host state, which is home to the University of Utah Press and Utah State University Press. Librarians from both universities will share their knowledge in meeting sessions, and meeting attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Rare Book Collection and Book Arts Studio at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah.

The programme sessions will be supplemented by a variety of opportunities for professional networking, both in person and online. The AAUP 2010 Program Committee's Facebook page has been a source of lively discussion and sharing that will continue during the meeting, in addition to interaction on Twitter (#AAUP10) and the Annual Meeting Wiki.
