Online books retailer Amazon.com, Inc., US, has introduced the latest version of its e-book reader, Kindle, at a price of $379, down from $489. The Kindle DX e-reader has been updated to include a new graphite enclosure and high contrast electronic ink display. It also offers free 3G wireless connection with no monthly bills or annual contracts, as the earlier model did.
This is reportedly the second price cut for Amazon's line of e-readers over the past two weeks. Only last week, the company cut down the price of its Kindle with a 6-inch screen to $189 from the original $222. The announcement came hours after bookstore chain Barnes & Noble lowered the price of its Nook e-reader to $199 from $234. Media reports indicate that both Amazon and Barnes & Noble could be forced to further cut prices to compete with Apple's iPad, which also functions as an e-book reader.
The Kindle Store currently has over 620,000 books. More than 200,000 books have been added to the US Kindle Store over the past six months. Over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books are also available to read on Kindle.
