Penguin to restore libraries' ability to loan e-books for Kindle -

US-based publisher Penguin Group is reportedly restoring libraries' ability to lend their e-books for Amazon.com's Kindle e-reader. It had earlier suspended making new e-books available to libraries. The company had then said it would not allow libraries to loan any e-books for the Kindle due to unspecified security concerns.

Penguin has now backtracked, saying it was informed by Amazon that the online retailer was not aware of Penguin's agreement with Overdrive, a supplier of e-books to libraries. The move to restore permission is temporary and eligible only through the end of the year. Amazon allows Kindle users to borrow e-books from local libraries through a partnership with OverDrive. The partnership seeks to vastly increase the Kindle's presence in libraries.

Penguin recently asked OverDrive to disable its 'Get for Kindle' function on Penguin books. OverDrive and Penguin are in the process of looking at new terms for libraries. The companies are all working together to address Penguin's concerns by the end of 2011.
