The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has announced the appointment of Judy F. Ruttenberg as Program Director for Transforming Research Libraries (TRL). Ruttenberg is currently Program Officer for Collections at the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), a collaborative organisation of Duke University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She will assume her role with ARL on November 1, 2011.
The fundamental mission of the ARL TRL Program Director is to develop and implement imaginative and practical strategies that promote and facilitate strategic transformations within and among research libraries, particularly with regard to their role in advancing the research enterprise and research-intensive teaching and learning. This mission is pursued in close collaboration with ARL member libraries, higher education and information technology partners, scientific and scholarly societies, and other library organisations.
At TRLN since 2005, Ruttenberg has managed inter-institutional task groups to explore and solve some of the complex issues facing ARL libraries today, including the sharing, retention, and storage of print materials; collaborative collection development, and the opportunities and constraints of e-resources relative to print; and collaborative large-scale digitization. She has also organised seminars and symposia for TRLN libraries staff on these topics and co-coordinated strategic planning retreats for TRLN library directors. Ruttenberg has seen TRLN's successes in these areas change institutional culture and transform skeptics into enthusiastic champions of cooperation.
Prior to her tenure at TRLN, Ruttenberg served as a librarian at several academic, research, and special libraries, including the University of California, Irvine, and the National Agricultural Library. Ruttenberg has been recognised throughout her career for providing leadership and building strong relationships among all levels of library staff.
