US-based software vendor Microsoft Corporation has announced the discontinuation of its support for the Reader e-book reader application. It will not sell content any more through the Reader app, starting November 8. The support will be withdrawn subsequently.
Access has been allowed for the downloaded content for an unlimited period of time. The company is, however, not keen on providing any alternate app to help its customers transfer their content safely.
The announcement has reportedly raised doubts over the decision as the e-book industry is currently at an all-time high. Companies including Apple and Amazon are trying to create a niche along with the launch of the latest e-readers and tablet computers such as iPad 2 and Kindle.
The Reader app has got least support from the company as the desktop version was last updated in 2007. The update for mobile phones came nearly two years ago.
