The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia has announced the appointment of a Committee on Open Access Publishing, comprised of faculty and ex officio staff from across the University. The Committee, appointed by Provost Vincent Price and Senior Vice Provost for Research Steven J. Fluharty, is examining the status of open access (OA) publishing practices. It will make recommendations by the end of the academic year regarding how the University might establish policies to better serve the Penn community and the general public.
The Committee was formed in response to the observed opportunity for broad and immediate access to information provided by the Internet. It is also in line with existing and potential requirements of federal funding agencies that research results be made available through OA repositories. Additionally, the Penn faculty has been looking to disseminate its scholarly work widely and quickly.
The other factors that led to the formation of the Committee on OA Publishing include the changing business dynamics of scholarly publishing and professional societies, as well as the adoption of OA publishing policies at the University’s peer institutions.
The Committee, chaired by Kevin Werbach of the Wharton School, welcomes input from the Penn community.
