European tablet sales get big boost from iPad launch, says research firm -

Market trends research firm Context Research has noted that Apple iPad has tripled sales of tablet computers in the European market, resulting in a 257 percent market boost. Since the iPad's launch in May, there has been a dramatic increase in the demand for tablet computers across the continent, Context Research adds. Market analysts have also noted a rare bounce back in the otherwise declining computer prices. According to them, the iPad influence may have also helped boost the cost of higher-priced all-in-one mobile PCs by about 3 percent.

Apple reportedly sold hundreds of thousands of iPads in the first few weeks following the May 28 introduction in Europe. It is estimated that the total worldwide shipment of the iPad will reach 8.13 million units by the end of 2010.

As more companies enter the fray, it may be increasingly difficult for the iPad to maintain a wide lead from the competition. There are already several processor choices, including x86 and ARM-based chips. Operating system alternatives include Android, MeeGo, WebOS and Chrome. These could lead to market fragmentation and dilution.

Tablet devices, like the iPad, are currently being marketed as multifunction entertainment devices. The success of these devices will hence depend on the availability of local applications and content.
