A special presentation celebrating the centennial of Canadian media philosopher Marshall McLuhan was made on the fourth day of the Frankfurt Book Fair. An ‘Open Studio’ surveyed guests in a live, participatory and mobile zone to explore the impact of McLuhan’s thinking on the enormous revolutions taking place within and beyond the book culture. Rare archival video material from the Embassy of Canada’s McLuhan Salon was also available for viewing.
Additionally, the Institut Francais d’Allemagne and the Goethe-Institut e.V. hosted a discussion aimed at answering the interesting question ‘Are social media improving the cultural dialogue?’ The panellists explored whether the social networking phenomenon is enhancing communication between cultures or is only an illusion. The discussion also examined the extent of the opportunities and risks for dialogue and cultural diversity posed by social media.
Encyclopaedia Britannica hosted a panel discussion focusing on the development and application of games-based learning. With product demonstrations and presentations by users and experts in digital education, the panel explored the connection between fun and learning.
