Brazilian National Library announces new programme to support translations and re-publication -

The Brazilian consul general in Frankfurt, Cézar Amaral, has announced that the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, an institution of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, has launched a new programme to provide support for translations and re-publication of Brazilian authors. The programme includes 7.6 million US dollars in funding that will be distributed between now and 2020. The move is part of the Brazilian government's overall strategy to disseminate the literature of its country, which is one of the 10 largest book producers in the world.

Translation funding will be dispersed in the form of grants ranging from 2,000 to 8,000 US dollars. Re-publication of out of print books will be supported with grants of up to 4,000 Euros. Applications can be submitted at any time between now and 2020. Those publishers that have been awarded funding will be announced every three months.

Two million US dollars will be made available from programme funds between now and 2013, when Brazil will be the Frankfurt Book Fair's Guest of Honour for the second time. By increasing state support for translations and re-publications, the Brazilian government is responding to suggestions raised by German experts at a meeting at the consulate general in 2010.

The president of the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, Galeno Amorim announced that a scholarship programme for translators will be launched in September on the occasion of the International Book Biennale of Rio de Janeiro.

The amount that will be invested annually by the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional from now until 2020 is ten times greater than the level of translation funding that has been provided in the last ten years. The programme is only open to foreign publishers and the Brazilian Foreign Ministry will assist the Ministry of Culture in communicating this initiative through its embassies. Going forward, the state export agency Apex will also support Brazilian publishers toward their participation at the most important book fairs in the world.
