ARL and Digital Library Federation to host METS workshop in June -

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Statistics and Assessment Program and the Digital Library Federation, a programme of the Council on Library and Information Resources, are offering a third, five-day METS (Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard) workshop. Called 'The Basics and Beyond,' the workshop will be held with Nancy J. Hoebelheinrich of the METS Editorial Board. It is aimed at people who work in digital and physical libraries and would like to gain knowledge and skills for organising the many and disparate component parts of individual digital resources. The workshop will be held from June 27-July 1, 2011 in New Orleans.

Although continuous, this hands-on workshop consists of three modules, any of which may be taken independently: The first module offers a thorough introduction to METS, including an overview of all of its high level features. The second module seeks to delve deeply into the heart of METS: the flexible mechanisms it provides for encoding, organising, and representing digital content of various kinds and for different purposes. It also looks at tools that can facilitate the implementation of METS and how their use may affect encoding decisions.

The third and final module explores strategies for implementing METS in a production environment, and provides participants with the opportunity to strategise about the implementation of METS within their own environments. Several case studies from institutions using METS in production environments will be presented.
