Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) is seeking an individual from a member organisation to represent the interests of all ALPSP members as a Director on the Board of the UK Publishers Licensing Society (PLS). The Board is made up of representatives from each of the three owners and ALPSP provides three representatives. One of the ALPSP representatives will complete his term and stand down at the end of 2013.
Established by the UK publishing industry in 1981, PLS is a collective management organisation (CMO) working on behalf of publishers to facilitate licensing solutions for education, public bodies and businesses. PLS provide mandates to the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) which in turn provides the licences to end users. It is PLS's responsibility to ensure that the distribution of income from such licences is accurate, efficient and transparent. PLS also plays an important role in promoting publishers' interests by protecting and strengthening copyright and licensing in the both UK and overseas.
PLS is part-owner of the CLA (with the Authors Licensing and Collecting Society) and PLS Board members are also responsible for providing guidance and support in the management of this joint venture. An ALPSP representatives is likely to be asked to represent the PLS Board on the CLA Board at some point in the future. The CLA Board also has a number of sub-Committees and any PLS Board member could be asked to serve on them.
Skills required for this position include, but are not reserved to, a knowledge of copyright and licensing, corporate governance, negotiation, and scholarly and professional publishing.
