mBio selected for indexing in MEDLINE -

The American Society for Microbiology has announced that the online-only, open-access microbiology journal mBio has been selected by the National Library of Medicine to be indexed in MEDLINE.

MEDLINE is one of the largest component of PubMed, the freely accessible online database of biomedical journal citations and abstracts created by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. About 5,400 journals published in the United States and more than 80 other countries have been selected and are currently indexed for MEDLINE.

The National Library of Medicine uses an NIH-chartered committee, the Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC), to review all new biomedical and health journal titles and recommend those to be indexed for MEDLINE. Overall, only 20 percent - 25 percent of the titles reviewed are selected for indexing.

Launched in May 2010, mBio is an e-journal designed to make research accessible even to non-scientists. The focus of the journal is on cutting-edge research spanning the entire spectrum of microbiology and related fields.

A key feature that sets the journal apart from other open access journals is that authors are required to include with their submissions a short, lay summary of the research describing the impact it will have so that the nonmicrobiologist can understand its importance. This summary is then published as part of the final article.
