Frankfurt Fair Hall 4.2 to host events for specialist publishers and professionals -

The Frankfurt Book Fair is projecting Hall 4.2 as the marketplace for science, specialist publishers, librarians and information professionals. Here, attendees to the fair are expected to find answers to queries such as how one can transfer knowledge digitally in the future; which business models will play a role; and what the library of the future will look like.

Publishers from the fields of law, economics, taxes (business tax law) and scientific, technical, medical (STM) are able to process their content to fit the precise needs of their customers with the help of metadata. To this end, the Frankfurt Academy will introduce its first metadata conference called ‘MetaData Perspectives’ (9 am – 2 pm, October 13, Congress Center, Room Illusion).

Another topic to be discussed will be open access. Should scientific content be available to everyone free of charge in the future? What role will publishers and booksellers play? These questions will be answered at a panel discussion on the new SPARKS Stage ("From On Demand to Open Access? Science Content Digital", 10:45 am – 11:45 am, October 12, B408), and at a symposium ("Economy and Acceptance of Open Access Strategies", 11 am – 4 pm, October 14, Hall 4.0, Room Europa 1).

As the marketplace for specialist information, Hall 4.2 also draws a very specific customer group – ‘information professionals’ and ‘one-person librarians’. These information management experts purchase tailor-made specialist information on a large scale from publishers for their institutes, law firms or companies. Then they make this information available in their companies’ databases. For this target audience, the Book Fair will be offering a networking initiative ("ipConnect", October 14, starting at 11 am, Hall 4.2), which includes a blog, conference, and iPad tour through Hall 4.2. Through this initiative, information professionals can connect with specialist publishers and blog about these contacts on their iPads. The goal is to highlight the use of new media and technology for individual information management.

In Hall 4.2, the ‘Hot Spot Professional & Scientific Information’ will celebrate its premiere as part of the digital initiative Frankfurt SPARKS. This exhibition space will bring together content and technology providers. To make the ‘Content Meets Technology’ principle come alive, a high-tech production line will demonstrate the evolution of an electronic reading room. In this context, the B.I.T Sofa will feature discussions on the ‘German Digital Library – Vision and Reality’ (11 am - 1 pm, October 12) and on ‘Copyright – Technically anything’s possible, but what do the scientists, publishers and lawyers think?” (11 am - 1 pm, October 14). Participants can then literally experience the world of science with their own senses through the ‘Weltmaschine’.

In Hall 4.2, the original control room of the CERN research institute’s Large Hadron Collider will be on display as a special exhibition. Physicists working on the project will be available on site and via live cam to provide information about the simulation of the first picosecond after the Big Bang.
