Frankfurt Academy to host conference on metadata strategies -

The Frankfurt Academy has announced the launch of the new Metadata Perspectives 2011 conference, scheduled for October 13, 2011. Hosted by founder and Editor-in-Chief of Publishing Perspectives, Ed Nawotka, the event is designed to answer publishers' queries at every level - from the basics of defining what metadata means in today's publishing environment, through to the role of the data aggregator. It will tackle the subject of metadata from a variety of points of view, offering advice on how to learn new digital strategies and suggesting ways to future proof businesses.

Dedicated data strategies are seen to be crucial for successful digital offerings. But what exactly is metadata, and why is it so important for publishing right now? How can publishers incorporate a better metadata strategy into their digital workflow, and why is 'discovery' such a critical issue? These are some of the questions that will be debated at the Metadata Perspectives conference. Industry experts will lead a series of short, hands-on sessions that will walk publishers through the principles of creating great metadata, and then show them how to apply it to their business to create sales.

Keynote speakers at this year's Metadata Perspectives include Ingrid Goldstein, a consultant at Knowledge Architectures, who will be doing an introduction to metadata and demonstrating why it is important when creating intelligent content and developing content strategies. Chairman of the Board at Jouve North America, Steve Paxhia, and his colleague EVP Jonathan Hevenstone, will explain how to manage metadata for production and discussing what changes need to be made as publishers move from print to digital. Michael Bhaskar, Digital Publishing Director at Profile Books UK and contributor to the Frankfurt Academy blog EveryThink (www.book-fair.com/everythink), will talk about why discovery on search engines is tantamount to publishing success. He will also explain how to craft proper book descriptions, how these impact discovery, and the three most common errors one can make along the way.

In addition, there will be a session about best practices presented by Editorial Manager at Sourcebooks, Peter Lynch. Peter Mathews, Publishing and Editorial Services Manager at Nielsen, will cover the role of the data aggregator, the benefits of improved metadata and the importance of using standards in the book supply chain.

Metadata Perspectives 2011 will take place on Thursday, October, 13, 9:30 am – 2:00 pm, Frankfurt Book Fair, Conference Center, Room Illusion: www.book-fair.com/metadata
