ARL membership elects ARL Board of Directors 2013–2014 -

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has announced that Carol Pitts Diedrichs, vice provost and director of university libraries, the Ohio State University, began a one-year term as president of the ARL on October 10, during the ARL Membership Meeting in Arlington, Virginia. She succeeds Wendy Pradt Lougee, university librarian and McKnight presidential professor, University of Minnesota. Lougee will continue to serve as a member of both the ARL Board of Directors and the ARL Executive Committee as past president.

Also on October 10, the ARL membership ratified the Board's election of Deborah Jakubs, the Rita DiGiallonardo Holloway university librarian and the vice provost for library affairs at Duke University, as ARL vice president/president-elect.

Three new Board members were elected by the membership to serve three-year terms: Mary Case, university librarian and dean of libraries, University of Illinois at Chicago; Richard E. (Rick) Luce, dean of university libraries, professor and Peggy V. Helmerich chair, and associate vice president for research, Norman Campus, University of Oklahoma Libraries; and Mary Ann Mavrinac, vice provost and Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly dean of the River Campus Libraries, University of Rochester.

Continuing elected members of the Board are: Larry Alford, chief librarian, University of Toronto; Connie Vinita Dowell, dean of libraries, Vanderbilt University; Thomas Hickerson, vice provost and university librarian, University of Calgary; Olivia M. A. Madison, professor and dean of the library, Iowa State University; Judith C. Russell, dean of university libraries, University of Florida; and Jay Schafer, director of libraries, University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Also serving on the Board in ex officio capacities are: David H. Carlson, dean of university libraries, Sterling C. Evans chair, Texas A&M University; Susan Gibbons, university librarian, Yale University; Brian E. C. Schottlaender, Audrey Geisel university librarian, University of California, San Diego; and Elliott Shore, executive director, ARL.

The Board is the governing body of the Association and represents the interests of ARL member libraries in directing the business of the Association, including establishing operating policies, budgets, and fiscal control; modifying the ARL mission and objectives; and representing ARL to the community.
