Consumer technology provider Samsung, Korea, has launched its iPad competitor, Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch touchscreen tablet, in the Indian market. India is among the three countries in the world where it is first launching the Galaxy Tab.
According to Samsung, Galaxy Tab would be available in the market from November 10 at a price of Rs. 38,000. The device is powered by the latest version of Google's operating software for mobile devices, Android Froyo.
The price of the devise puts it squarely against the iPad. Unlike the iPad, which is a 10-inch tablet, Galaxy Tab has a smaller screen. But it supports making and receiving calls through a Bluetooth-enabled headset, which the iPad does not allow. According to a research analyst, the fact that Apple is yet to launch its tablet formally in India could work out in favour of Samsung.
Since Apple launched iPad early this year, small touchscreen computing devices have seen huge growth. Several hardware manufacturers are trying to cash in on the opportunity. According to Research Mason, more than 24 million tablets are expected to be sold in 2011 worldwide, amounting to over 100 percent growth in one year. Last month, Gartner Inc. also released a report that forecast that worldwide media tablet sales to end users would reach 19.5 million units in 2010. Media tablets are poised for strong growth with worldwide end user sales projected to total 54.8 million units in 2011, up 181 percent from 2010, and surpass 208 million units in 2014.
