Apple seen to relax subscription rules for publishers of iPad apps -

Computer and software firm Apple, Inc., US, is reportedly relaxing its iPad subscription rules. The move is likely to be welcomed by magazine and newspaper publishers who are developing applications for the popular tablet in a bid to increase revenue.

Media reports indicate that Apple will no longer require publishers to offer subscriptions via its App Store at the same price or less than offered elsewhere. Apple takes a 30 percent cut of subscriptions purchased through the App Store.

Some publishers had condemned the size of the cut and expressed displeasure with some of the guidelines laid down by the company when it launched its subscription service for digital magazines and newspapers on the iPhone or iPad in February.

Apple had then said that there would be no revenue sharing for digital subscriptions sold through a publisher's own website. According to MacRumors website, Apple has removed that requirement in the latest version of its subscription guidelines, which are expected to take effect on June 30.

Apple's subscription service had been first offered with The Daily, a New Corp digital newspaper for the iPad. Due to a decline in circulation and ad revenues, most newspaper and magazine publishers are seen to be looking to the iPad and the web to drive revenue growth.
