Computer and software firm Apple, Inc., US, may offer consumers a new way to access digital information and songs on smartphones and computers at its Worldwide Developers Conference, it has been reported. Addressing the gathering, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to preview software updates for the company's iPhone, iPad and Mac, and also the new iCloud online storage service. iCloud is designed to help devices to wirelessly share the same materials.
Apple is reportedly using iCloud to maintain its dominance in the tablet and smartphone markets in the midst of fresh competition from devices powered by Google's Android software. According to Frank E. Gillett, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Forrester Research, the new service may improve how users can access content across different Apple devices, keeping customers from defecting to rivals.
Apple announced last week it would preview iCloud at the conference, without providing more details. The company is also in a deal with major record labels for a service that would let people access their iTunes song libraries from any Apple device through an Internet connection, instead of downloading a copy of the song to a device, according to people familiar with the plans.
Apple will also use its developers conference to preview new updates to the operating system for Mac computers, called OS X Lion, and the fifth iteration of the iOS software that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch mobile devices.
