Google releases Government version of web-based productivity software -

Internet search services provider Google, Inc. has reportedly released a special version of its web-based productivity software. A new suite of Internet-hosted calendar, email and other products are designed to meet stringent US government security requirements. The company claims to be the first company to offer email, calendaring and other cloud-based software products with a special government certification.

With this release, Google seeks to outmaneuver rivals who are competing to provide federal and state agencies with new technology. Software vendor Microsoft recently began offering web-based versions of its Office software, which is widely used by large corporations and government agencies in the US.

Google has said that it achieved certification under the Federal Information Security Management Act last Thursday. According to Google, the certification means that the company can handle government information deemed sensitive, but not classified.

The special government software version will store all information on servers hosted within the continental United States. Servers hosting government data will be physically separate from servers used for corporate customers.
