A study conducted by information services firm Thomson Reuters, US, has revealed that China has witnessed significant growth in research output, well above the rest of the world. If the pace continues, China is likely to overtake the US within 10 years. Titled Global Research Report: China, the report spells out China’s research and collaboration potential for policymakers. It is part of Thomson Reuters’ Global Research Report series.
The study further points out that China is no longer dependent on ties with richer partners like the US and Europe to advance its knowledge development. The report has mined data from the database Web of Science, hosed on the platform Web of Knowledge.
According to the study, China's research papers output rose to nearly 112,000 in 2008 from a mere 20,000 in 1998. It has nearly doubled its output since 2004, surpassing the UK, Germany and Japan in 2006. The study further says China's research is focused on technology and the physical sciences, with a concentration on chemistry, physics and materials science. It is expected that in the future, there will be increased attention being given to life sciences and agricultural sciences.
Among collaborators with China, the US comes first – American authors contributed to about 9 percent of papers from Chinese institutions during 2004-08. There has also been significant expansion in regional collaboration, particularly with Singapore, Australia, Korea and Japan.
