Each year the Society for Scholarly Publishing's Nominating and Awards Committee considers highly dedicated members for special recognition. The winners were recognised on June 1, 2012, during the 34th Annual Meeting in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Emerging Leader Award is the Society’s latest recognition. It honours a member who is relatively new to the scholarly communication field and who has demonstrated considerable leadership acumen on SSP committees. This year’s winner, Michelle Norell, has played a key role as Co-Chair of the Marketing Committee.
The 2012 Appreciation Award, which recognises a volunteer who has made noteworthy contributions that advance the Society’s strategic goals, was awarded to Will Wakeling for leading the increasingly busy Travel Grant Award Subcommittee since 2007.
The SSP Distinguished Service Award honours a member who has made sustained, significant contributions to the Society and the scholarly communication field over a period of many years. Norman Frankel received the 2012 award for his service as a past president, past chair of multiple committees, current Co-Chair of the Organizational Collaborations Committee, and an SSP rep to the Chicago Collaborative.
