Dr. Patricia Flatley Brennan has begun her service as director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world's largest medical library and a component of NIH. She is the first woman and the first nurse to serve in that role.
She will be publicly sworn in as NLM Director at a ceremony at the Library on September 12, 2016. NIH Director Dr. Francis S. Collins, who announced Dr. Brennan's appointment in May, will be among the speakers at that event.
Dr. Patti Brennan comes to NLM from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was the Lillian S. Moehlman-Bascom Professor, School of Nursing and College of Engineering. She also led the Living Environments Laboratory at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, which develops new ways for effective visualization of high dimensional data. A recipient of many awards, Dr. Brennan is a past-President of the American Medical Informatics Association, a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, the American Academy of Nursing, and the New York Academy of Medicine.
